Let’s “Wow” the world with Japanese culture. Continued on the Cultural Appropria

atsushijp, 2019年6月28日

Let’s “Wow” the world with Japanese culture. Continued on the Cultural Appropriation issue with @kimono. Please read until the last. This post is not about what is Art or not. I appreciate all of your admiration for our crafts. More importantly, I would like to change Kim’s mind by wowing the world. Kimono can be Art and it is embarrassing to name underwear Art. ☆
If you think the Jacket in the photo is Art, please share this post. I personally think it is not the (Fine) Art – it is just a result of ordinarity of the Japanese. However, I appreciate your value to Boro (to-be) as the Art.
☆
This Noragi (to be authentic Boro) was (is) a Jacket the Japanese “ordinary” wore everyday. In contrast, some types of Kimono were the clothing for the special occasion (extra-ordinary). So, if you think the Boro Jacket is an Art piece, Kimono culture itself should be the Art. Using the name of Art and Culture for the underwear brand is simply embarrassing. ☆
I have been thinking how to communicate to the world. My saying “Oh, you are crossing the boundary of Cultural Appropriation!! Stop it and Change the Name” is one good way. I will keep saying it, and so the other people should do as well. However, as Kim said, “I respect the Kimono but not planning to change the name, they listen to what they want to listen. So, let’s surprise (Wow!) the world how “caring” the Japanese culture is – and therefore it is so beautiful. I hope this “Wow – That is super cool!” can communicate how embarrassing it is to use the name Kimono for the underwear. (I had a Live Streaming in English on 6/28 at 10:30 EST. You should be able to check it out in the story archives).
☆

I have a dream. One day, we would respect other’s preferences rather than insisting on one’s preference. The reason I teach Sashiko is to always come back there. There are so many rules, definitions, and information misled by those who think they know about words. They unfortunately result in excluding…

Sashiko existed in Japanese ordinary. After the Japanese decided to not carry on Sashiko, due to the unnecessity, Sashiko became something extraordinary today. Simple hand-stitching for hours and hours can be an “act of insanity” for some types of people. ☆ It is my dream to bring back “this ordinary…

“How do you stitch so fast?”, “How come your stitches are so even?”, “It must have taken so many months to make the Jacket. I don’t have that much time”.  ☆ I receive many questions – sometimes for advice, sometimes with disappointment of their giving up. Not so often, but…

@kimono should really be kimnono – such insensitivity and narcissism – it was obviously an extension of her name Kim. Why not Karnono or Westoto?

Thanks for sharing❣️I do like to read everything you write. You really convince me that it is important to be aware what you do and respect your ancestors. Art for me is a difficult thing. I dont think it is important to categorize. I dont see Boro as art, although it is very beautiful and for me more beautiful than a wide range of things called art. Art is often considered to be of more value than everyday things. Since I like the used and worn I often like these everyday things more than art made by artists. I feel the connection with the people who made and used the things in the past even though I never met them. 💙

I like boro because it is using all small things to make something new. Western style quilting (patchwork) is the same thing, art made from the ordinary. ❤️
