Thank you for reactions to the previous post about “Vintage fabric and the spirit in it (Animism)”. I hope I communicated that it isn’t about the fabric you receive tangibly – it is about our heritage we can appreciate in today’s society. It isn’t our first intention to bring the spirituality in Sashiko discussion (therefore I rarely write about it). However, without mentioning Animism, I feel something is missing, and your comments encouraged me to write a bit more.
☆
Some family left their previous fabric. Some didn’t (couldn’t) leave them because of their situations. Even if your ancestor didn’t leave them, I hope you can feel a connection between what you do and who they were. For those who receive the fabrics, with many stories, it is fortunate to have the fabric from the heritage – and I don’t want you to stitch with “whatever we already have.” Regardless of the actual fabric existence, I hope you can appreciate your own heritage.
☆
Frankly speaking, this topic (spirit) is one of the reasons I recommend the good Sashiko supplies and tools for your Sashiko project. Yes, you can use any kind of materials to do Sashiko. However, I want you to try the best in supplies and tools (thread and needles). The fabric from the heritage is priceless. If you receive it from your ancestors, it is a fortunate gift. If you decided to use the fabric in Sashiko (or Boro) project, I am here to provide the best supplies to avoid unnecessary damages.Try the best material when you add your own spirit in the fabric – and the result of adding the spirit on top of the heritage is so called “Boro”, I believe. The good thread and needles are one way to respect the fabric.
