Another follow-up for the previous posts about Boro. The article was about “What is Good Japanese Vintage Fabric for Boro” with explaining characteristic of unique old fabric in Japan. You know what is the BEST vintage fabric for your project? (I mentioned this bit in the article). It is the fabric from your own ancestors – the heritage with stories. ☆
We make a lot of Sashiko items. So we need to purchase the vintage fabric. However, the very first reason my family started doing Sashiko is because of the Furoshiki passed down by our ancestors. The fabric from your own (great x) grandparents with many stories would be the hands-down best fabric for your Boro (to be) project.

The Japanese (originally) followed the Animism. We believed “everything has spirit in it”. I personally follow it, and therefore, I try to talk to the fabric first when I obtain the vintage fabric. Each fabric has its own story. I sometimes feel that the Sashiko is a process of praying – to communicate to a spirit. I never intend to talk about a specific belief here, but you may understand what I am talking about by appreciating what you received from your family. We could talk to the people who passed away by appreciating what they valued. It is my way to respect my father and what he was trying to achieve. See? I have numbers of reasons that I feel Sashiko is more than stitching for the beautiful result. ☆
先日書いた「良い古布とは？」という記事への反響があって嬉しい限りです。同時に、少し懸念として、「良い古布」という基準だけに目が向けられてしまうのでは……と思い、もっと大事なことを紹介する文章も書くつもりです。何よりもの「良い古布」とは、ご先祖様が（無意識に）残した布です。我が家も含めて、もうそんな布が存在しない家庭が多いとは思いますが、自分のルーツになるだろう布は、もう何よりもの宝物だと思うのです。

布は語ります。八百万の神を信じた日本人的信仰が自然に感じられるので、今でも僕はスピリチュアル的なことは大切にするようにしています。針目診断もその一つ（笑）。これ、凄く不思議なことなのですが、何時間も刺し子をしていると、ふと「布と会話する」時間があるように思うのです。24時間配信しながら刺し子をすると、途中で嫌になりますが、一人で無言で布と向き合う時、僕らはきっと、布と会話しているように思うのです。日本国外だと「ねぇ、病院行かなくて大丈夫？」と聞かれてもおかしくない話なのですが、でも、そういう側面も含めて刺し子を伝えていきたいなぁと。単純作業の中にある奥深さ（の一因）って、この、「会話」だと思うんですよね。
