“Why do you call your stitching Sashiko?” ☆

“Why do you call your stitching Sashiko?” ☆
The purpose of the question is not questioning (nor accusing) what a person does. I just wanted to see if the person would think: “I call my stitching Sashiko because I like Sashiko!” In the last posts, I may have made you think that I will be offended by you calling your project/stitching Sashiko. I will NOT be offended because you like Sashiko & you thought of the person (me, here) who may be offended already. I believe that the person who worries if she/he is ignorant is already not ignorant. Please call your project Sashiko (if you would like to), and I am here to support your Sashiko.
☆
Sashiko is a strange practice even in the Japanese culture. Including myself, not many can define the full picture of Sashiko. Or, probably, we try to not to define what Sashiko is to preserve its culture. No organization to issue a certification for Sashiko specifically and no federal support to protect Sashiko. It exist(ed) in the ordinary Japanese people’s mind and The Practice.
☆
The Japanese have accepted many cultural transformations/interpretation (=T/I) of the unique culture. Sushi, Futon, a lot more. The Japanese smile and accept those changes outside of Japan because they have a strong cultural structure behind it. A traditional Sushi chef can smile to Gozzila Roll because the master knows the G.R. has its own culture. Sashiko is a bit different from Sushi – no strong cultural structure.
☆
Because of Sashiko’s characteristic, Ordinary Practice, I feel it is very fragile in cultural T/I. I believe the culture is supposed to transform its style over time. I worry the Internet expedite the speed of T/I. In a transition of this beautiful culture, I sincerely hope that we would keep the respect to the Japanese culture. I just don’t want to find out, in the future, that our kids use the word Sashiko as just stitching technique without knowing it is from Japan and the culture… The emotion behind my reactions is not arrogance or trying to be on authority, it is the fear.
☆
今回の議論、一番の根本には「恐怖」があります。時の流れで文化の有り様は変化します。それが正常。ただ、インターネットがある現代、その変化のスピードが早すぎる場合があります。だから、一言釘を刺しておきたかったんです。

We believe the fabric talk. Some fabric narrates its stories. I sometimes feel it is nonsense to discuss what is “right” in Sashiko. The stitches show who we are. Therefore, I share the importance of the process in Sashiko. ☆ My stories aren’t much from books although I love books….

    「刺し子って、一目毎にデニムにステッチすることらしいよ!どこからきたかとかは知らない。」とか表面的なものになってしまったら、寂しくて仕方がないじゃないですか。

Is the practice called sashiko or the result?

I have only done a bit, following your instruction, on a pair of my own denim, though I would like to do more to mend some of the clothes we have. I named it that when I was referring to your generous instruction so I could share your page and help spread the word. So along the lines of “I am learning Sashiko from this page.”

I love how you explain your thoughts so concisely. I have been hesitant to to call my decorative/reinforcing stitching sashico because while continually inspired by historical pieces and work by artisans like yourself, Not being Japanese or having real background in the art (just observation) I’m not sure of the boundaries of what is sashico, and do not wish to misrepresent. I appreciate how welcoming and generous you are in giving context to sashico and hand crafting in general. Keep up the good work.
