It is difficult to preserve the culture, especially if the culture is strongly connected to the people’s unconscious mind. Occasionally, advocating the mindset of one culture could be “trespassing their memories”. We (Japanese) would barely say “Stay out” or “None of your business” because confronting upto the face is the least favorite things to do. However, we silently could choose to withdraw ourselves. It probably happened a lot, already.
☆
Therefore, I focus on “sharing” what we know & practice. I do not consider myself an activist to advocate the Japanese Sashiko culture. However, I would like to preserve the culture as well. To preserve the culture, there are few key activities we can do on top of respecting the creators. 1) support the suppliers and tool makers – without the proper tools and supplies, the culture cannot preserve its own form. Knowing & trying will be just fine. The suppliers survived for the reasons – they make good stuff. “Trying” the good materials will change the project & end up with supporting the culture. 2) Share what you learn. There is nothing wrong to Not-to-know. In this result oriented society, quick information gets the credit. It isn’t the matter of good or bad. The culture need to adjust the society as well. In order to preserve it, we would need to choose the information to share. The reason to share what we have – so YOU can share them to someone you care. Not someone’s information provided by Google. Sharing the information you synchronized your days, felt “vibration”, or simply enjoyed or impressed, will support the preservation of the culture & its outcome (craft).
☆

I talked about “being special (≈ individualism)” in the previous post. I appreciate feedback that “I (Atsushi)” is special because of what I share. To be honest, though, I do not consider myself special. I know it because I tried so hard to be “special” in the past. ☆ If…
