atsushijp, 2019年4月30日

Completion of 4 days Denim Project. 20 hours of upcycle the torn & naturally damaged denim (with a hole) to one Sashiko stitched Denim. Sometimes, Sashiko is categorized as the “Slow-Fashion”, and I don’t know if 20 hours of stitching will be categorized as “fast” or “slow”, but I would like to pursuit the mastery of Sashiko stitching on the denim, not only the fixing the holes but also the stitching to the existing denim to make it stronger.
☆
It is all hand-stitched. The whole process is on the Youtube (not edited at all). I hope you can follow this fun process of upcycling your own denim. By adding the stitches, it looks so much different, unique and warm. Keep in mind. Sashiko isn’t about making one beautiful stitch, it is about enjoying the process. It was a great 20 hours of stitching with thinking of stories of this Denim can create from now on.
☆
☆

When I share photos of a big Sashiko project, like Sashiko Jackets or Sashiko Denims, I occasionally get a question, “Is it really hand-stitched”? The answer is, “Yes, it is hand-stitched”. I received the same question many times in my life that the question is no longer disrespectful. It may…

“Are you saying that we have to understand where ‘Sashiko’ and ‘Boro’ came from & What they are before we claim we are doing Sashiko & Boro?”. One frequent question I receive. I have shared answers already here and on Youtube, but it is important to deliver. So here we…

Originally, Japanese practiced Sashiko in harsh conditions with limited resources. They didn’t have choices to “replace” fabrics. Holding the precious, yet roughly woven fabric, they stitch to make fabric last long. I imagine… they wished they would have enough resources to replace fabric. They didn’t want her family to look…
