[Continued from yesterday’s post] – So we don’t follow the basic procedure of fashion – no season and no deadstock. In other words, when we make a Sashiko jacket, we hope that the person will enjoy the jacket throughout one’s life, possibly pass it down to the next generation. Every year, every season, the well-woven fabric & Sashiko thread will change its color and the time add the beauty on the Jacket. It is a jacket made from fabric. It is stronger than the other fabric because of Sashiko, but of course, it gets damaged, torn, and weaken. We are here to keep mending & repairing with our Sashiko stitching, but it will be time-consuming & costly (with shipping and extra). Therefore, we share the Sashiko we practice so everyone can jump into the social experiment that I am doing now (when she/he is interested).
☆
Famous “Boro” is a mixture of “unintentional” yet “intended” piece, I believe. I do not believe that the Japanese back then kept repairing the fabric to end up with the “World famous art piece”. However, the beauty of Boro cannot be completed at random. I feel the “pride” of Japanese women who wanted to be “fashionable” even in the extreme environment. Today, we have choice of colors, fabrics, and designs. We can do literally what we want. So, I hope, our children a few hundreds years from now would be proud of us for enjoying both side of “Fashion”. One as the expression of who we are and one as the memory of who we are. The authentic Boro I define requires the “continuous process of using it”. We also enjoy Boro-inspired patchwork and all these category hopefully passed down to our next. ☆

“Are you saying that we have to understand where ‘Sashiko’ and ‘Boro’ came from & What they are before we claim we are doing Sashiko & Boro?”. One frequent question I receive. I have shared answers already here and on Youtube, but it is important to deliver. So here we…

People ask: “Is it okay to do Sashiko on Denim Jeans. It isn’t traditional.” – I answer, “Yes, of course. But, please try to learn what Sashiko is”. I am NOT denying the change in culture – without changes, it isn’t culture. I just want “changes” to be sincere, not…

Sashiko Stitching (Asanoha & Shippou), Repair, Patchwork, on the Denim with a go

Sashiko Stitching (Asanoha & Shippou), Repair, Patchwork, on the Denim with a good photo-model. Just beyond the words. I worry, and very occasionally get upset, that the culture of Sashiko may be repainted by random “freedom”. Again, this Denim isn’t my work. Not even Keiko’s work. Natsuki (@natsuki__ishihara) took my…
