I uploaded an article & video about a topic, “Do we make knots in Sashiko & Boro”. We were in the environment that everyone practice overlay stitches instead of knots, so it wasn’t even a question for me to debate which is better. I still believe there isn’t such a thing as better or worse | right or wrong. We also use knots based on a project. The important point is, “why” we do overlay stitching and wisdom behind it.

Technique is very important in Sashiko (and any other crafting). However, a person who just learned technique tend to get “bored”, and therefore I would like to share something more than technique, which is the wisdom, mindset, and probably hints to make our life more colorful. I hope the article & video help you to understand “One perspective” of Sashiko, and they will provide an opportunity to think of “what we can do to appreciate the hand crafting culture”.

刺し子をする際に玉止めをするかどうか。「刺し子は重ねるもんだ」という環境で育ってきたので、疑問にすら思わなかった事です。勿論、作品によっては玉止めもしますが、「重ねって何？」というのは刺し子の初期段階のものだと思ってて、上手に言葉にできていませんでした。で、英語での、「玉止めするの？」という議論に巻き込まれつつ（笑）

技術としての「玉止め＆重ね」は勿論大事なのですが、同時に、「なぜ玉止めじゃなく重ねるのか」という背景（智慧）をもっと知ってほしいと思うのです。きっと「重ね」も、様々な回り道をしての今の形だと思いますし。英語だと、どうも「技術」に焦点があたりがちです。もちろん技術は大事なのですが、技術だけだと人は「飽き」るんです。もっと上手に伝えられるようになりたいなぁ。

私は洋裁で育って来たので、刺し子は何故玉止めで無いのか疑問でした。裏側も美しく見せる為かなぁなんて勝手に思っています😊

コメントありがとうございます。そうか、日本語でもニーズがあるのか……と勉強になりました。「刺し子の本」って沢山出版されていると思うのですが、重ねとかについて触れてないの！？ごめんなさい、刺し子の本は原則目を通すだけで、吉田英子さんの本以外は読み込んだことがなくて。また教えて頂ければ嬉しいです。
