Do you know how a traditional craft run out of its business? Many people think the traditional business run out of business because of the financial situation, like a bankruptcy. The other may think that the business is no longer viable because of the lack of younger artisans. However, in fact, the traditional craft run out of its business and “vanish” from the society when “suppliers (manufactures of supply and tools)” went out of business. 米国（英語）って、日本人の方が思っている以上に本音を嫌う文化だと思っていて、だからこそずっと失礼なことがあっても気持ちを表現することはなかったのですが、先日ちょっと限界がきて、数回に分けて英語で思いを綴りました。「失礼なメールは無視すりゃいいじゃん」ってのが王道なのは承知しているのですが、それでもご縁を頂いて刺し子を好きになってくれる方であれば、「刺し子の向こう側にある日本的な丁寧さ」も好きになってほしくて。今の所、反応は好意的なもので、少し安心しています。

「失礼」続きで言うと、「値段が高すぎ」というお客様も、そりゃ沢山いらっしゃいます。大量生産＆大量消費の時代の中で、手仕事で作られる作品の値段は、どうしても高くなります。同時に、「刺し子をお金を稼ぐ手段だけじゃなく、（残したい）文化として捉えている」というところも上手に伝えていかなければならないのです。ある文化が衰退する時は、その担い手がいなくなる時じゃないんです。担い手は、なんだかんだで見つかる事が多い。衰退が決定的となってしまうのは、その文化を「支える道具や材料」がなくなった時です。刺し子で言えば、専用の針と糸がなくなってしまうと、どれだけ僕たちが「刺し子すげーぜ！」って言っても、本来の姿では残らないのです。だからこそ違いをわかってほしいし、知って欲しい。って、日本語が読める人なら、もうわかってることだとは思うのですが、備忘録として。これ、英語で説明するの大変なんですよ（笑）
