I say there isn’t such a thing as right or wrong in Sashiko. However, I of course have the preference. I shared my preference in Sashiko today in a conversation with my Sashiko friends. I believe the preference is good enough for enjoying Sashiko. We don’t need to judge anyone including ourselves, ☆
However, when we receive a commission, this preference can be an excuse. I do not want to use “preference” as a way to allow ourselves not to be consistent. “Reproducibility” and “Continuity” are the keywords to protect the culture. It is handmade (or hand-dyed) therefore everything is one-of-a-kind. However, we always try our best to come up with the same one. It is not a matter of the ability to do so, but the matter of “intention to try the best.” We would like to be there, and stay there in Sashiko. ☆

刺し子に正解も間違いもないと思っていますが、もちろん好きな刺し子とあまり惹かれない刺し子は存在します。今日は刺し子の友人達に、そんな話をする機会がありました。基本、刺し子は「好み」で良いと思っています。ただ、同時に「刺し子屋」としてお金を頂く機会がある場合、この「好み」を逃げの手段にはしたくないと思っています。「手仕事だから毎回違う。そこに魅力がある」と作り手が言うのは、単なる逃げになってしまう可能性があります。手仕事だけれど、いや、手仕事だからこそ、「再現性と継続性」をしっかりと認識していく。この心構えで継続することで、文化を残せるプロになれるのかなと。能力じゃないんです。心意気。僕らもそこを目指して頑張ります。
