This is my favorite Boro Jacket from Keiko. She made it for me when I decided to continue offering the Sashiko Workshop in NYC.

I plan to talk about what is “Boro” and its definition on Youtube. Boro is a result of continous stitching (so-called Sashiko), in which the ordinary Japanese practiced it in their ordinary days. Nothing fancy, but the fabric with their feeling in it became the beautiful Boro. ★
We try to follow the original Japanese culture and “re-create” Boro. We aren’t the Boro dealer or antique collector. We are a group of Sashiko artisans who try to make Boro from the vintage fabric, with synchronizing the feeling to the Japanese who developed this beautiful culture. 「良い襤褸の定義」はとても難しいのですが、「継ぎ接ぎをして、刺し子をして補修＆補強された布」という一般的な定義に加えて、僕は一つの区切りをつけています。良い襤褸とは、「感情 – 喜怒哀楽 -を感じることができる布」かどうかを大切にしています。

私達は、襤褸になるような布を洗い、余分な糸や汚れは落として、襤褸を「再制作」しています。その際に、できるだけ、「昔の日本人と意識をシンクロさせること」を意識しています。もちろん、イメージの話です。ただ、「誰かを思って刺し子をすること」で、そこには感情が入ると思うのです。そして、布が語るようになる。そして語る布こそが、襤褸だと思っています。

「誰かの幸せを願う喜」という感情だけではありません。「虐げられた怒」、「孤独のなかの哀」、そして「運針の楽（しみ）」。なんでも良いのです。他人を裁くのは刺し子の本質ではありません。自分と向き合い、自分なりの落とし所を見つけ、そして針に落とし込み、結果襤褸になる（なった）。そんな尊さが当たり前だった日本人を誇りに思い、またそれを日本国内外に紹介したいと思っています。今日の投稿はブログみたいですみません。書きたいことが沢山あって（笑）
