Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

*

I am aware of what I have been asked: “Who are you (Atsushi?)”, “What do you do

atsushijp, 2022年9月25日

I am aware of what I have been asked: “Who are you (Atsushi?)”, “What do you do (Sashiko)?”, “What is Sashiko?” “When did your profession (Sashiko?) start?”, “How do you describe your (art)work” – what, when, who(m), which, why and how. Many who find me expect to get answers, ideally the brief answer so that they can grasp “Sashiko” and “Boro” quickly. I cannot describe myself in a few sentences. Therefore, SashikoStory exists. Unfortunately, many leave this account because I do not offer what they wanted to receive as their favorable answers.
☆
If you are new here who is disappointed by unclear stories I share at this point, please give me chance. I know what I am doing here. It just takes time to get through both “technical” and “cultural” aspects of Sashiko: Some may get it within a few days, or others may need decades of years to get it – but Bear With Me, please.
☆
Some say my words are confusing. Well, confusion is NOT a bad thing. It proves it is something new to learn. Similarly, “Hanging between a question and answer” indecisively is also NOT a bad thing. You are about to learn something outside of your box called “expectation”. Please try not to squeeze “it” which shapes something different into your box: it may break, or your box may be damaged. I am sharing stories so that you can prepare your box to accept new shapes. You are interested in Sashiko as “Japanese” Stitchery, right? Then, you are in the right place – it just takes longer than you (they) wish to have the answers.

Society asks you to be someone special. They say, “Find true-self within you”, and encourage you to be the “Only One” by doing something. They teach you how to be creative as if creativity clears your suffering. If “creativity is the greatest rebellion in existence (Quote from Osho)”, what they…

I like doing things with my own hands. Cooking, Wood-Crafting (like simple furniture), fixing minor house issues, painting, and of course, stitching. In my youth, I tried so hard to be wealthy so that I have enough luxury to enjoy what I like. I was trying to “achieve” the happiness…

I love that you share the technical and the cultural aspects! I’m a quiet lurker, supplies bought, and almost ready to learn. Keep going!

I am not looking for practical instructions, but I love to read your meditations on Sashiko, and your thinking behind the craft and its teaching (if sashiko was ever “taught”, or could ever be “taught” formally). As long as we keep asking ourselves questions, we keep learning.

I do not sew Sashiko but I appreciate it, and I really enjoy your posts – I might not always understand them right away but I think about them, come back to them, look forward to the next one. Sometimes I think about writing a comment but I don’t know what to say – I wanted to comment now to let you know I am reading.
