以前は、「刺し子と社会問題」を結びつけて考えることはなかったのですが、様々なコトがあって、今は「刺し子の可能性」も感じ始めています。ちょっと真面目なブログも書きました。

I agree so much with what you are saying.
Being raised in western culture, my mind is split. Why would I spend an hour of my time mending something when it would take a fraction of an hour’s work to earn enough money to replace it? However, I know how much of a difference can be made by buying ethically and reusing. I’m not asking a question, just working on my philosophy. Thanks for a great post!

@wabi_sabiteur I am sincerely with you. Although I was raised in a Sashiko family, I have been struggling to find out the “meaningful” of Sashiko. In the economically wealthy society, repairing the item doesn’t make sense financially and economically. You can get a pair of good jeans less than $60, while you would need to spend either 20 hours to do so. It does not make sense from the modern mindset (I would like to avoid “western” here since the modern Japanese are like it too.) It is not all about cost and return. Sashiko isn’t about “saving” the environment. It is about the appreciation to what we have already… That is my ‘temporary’ answer to what I love to do, Sashiko. I am working on writing an article about it. I will share it when I complete. I appreciate your comment. I feel sometimes I should replace things I have. My mother in law once cried when I was wearing the torn pants that I didn’t have enough money to replace. lol. I am doing it as a social experiment. Let’s see how it goes 🙂 Keep in touch!

@bunko48 数ある刺し子の形の中で、多くの刺し子の原点が補強であり補修だという理解です。現代では、どうしても直す方がコストが高かったりするので、必要のない文化にはなってしまっているのかなとも思いつつも、でも、そこから生まれる美もあるのかなと、社会実験的にいろいろやってみています。襤褸は、こういった補修の究極の形ですし、恵子さんの作品も、主に使われなくなった古布をもう一度蘇らせるという意味合いで作られています。思いを共有できてよかったです。
