Everytime I meet new people, I start wondering who we are (Keiko & Atsushi). As long as we understand, we don’t find ourselves as artists, fashion designers, art dealer (business), and ecologist. It is perfectly fine when someone else define who Keiko & Atsushi are with the specific title, but we really don’t feel the need for it. The best & simple description would be, we are “A group of mother, son & their friends” who happen to devote (come across) their life into Sashiko, and would like to keep enjoying it (all the business activities are for the purpose of us keep enjoying Sashiko). ☆
Over the last weekend in Sashiko Workshop, some friends (students) told me that the Sashiko pieces should be in the frame. It is an honor to receive such a feedback because they thought our works deserve the framing as the art. Other friends kept mentioning that we are the artist. I sincerely appreciate the warm comments and respect to us.

It may be just us… when we mention Sashiko as the “Art”, I feel a bit strange taste in my mouth. No right or wrong, just strange. Until the day I clear those “strange feeling”, we will be the same as a group of people who love Sashiko. You know what is the most important thing to enjoy Sashiko? It is “be okay with who you are and what you end up with”. So much to share 😀 I can probably keep talking for a day.

I would say you are an artist. From Wikipedia “ “An artist is a person engaged in an activity related to creating art, practicing the arts, or demonstrating an art. The common usage in both everyday speech and academic discourse is a practitioner in the visual arts only.”””
I like to refer to you as an artisan. Much different than an artist. Definition: A worker in a skilled trade, especially one that involves making things by hand.
I loved this post. I agree with your students, your Sashiko creations looks like art pieces to me! I found your work a few weeks ago and thanks to you, I am now making my first steps in the art of Sashiko. Thank you Keiko and Atsushi!
