There are so many descriptions about Sashiko – mainly “should do” and “shouldn’t do”. I believe there isn’t such a thing as right or wrong Sashiko. However, there are wisdom that the Japanese developed over time to make Sashiko more beautiful and practical.

When you do Sashiko, I want you to “think over” what is your preference. If you just want to make the stitches with geometric patterns, you can do whatever you want. What we would like to share is a bit more than that – the stories and reasons why the Japanese practiced Sashiko with the technique. Once you learn it, it is much easier and practical to keep enjoying Sashiko stitching. ☆
“What is the right way to do Sashiko?”. ”Does Sashiko need knots?”. There are numbers of questions. I try to share the answers on our web & Youtube. After that, it is your choice to apply that to your Sashiko. Furthermore, hopefully, you imagine and respect why we follow those techniques and wisdoms. ☆
英語で刺し子の説明を読んでいると、時に首を傾げてしまう表現に出会います。玉止めをするのかしないのか。どの糸を使うのか。お味噌汁に絶対的な答えはないように、刺し子にも絶対的な正解はありません。だからこそ、「想像力」を使って欲しいと思うのです。正解がないからこそ、「なぜ」を思い続ける。その際に、「誰かがこう言ったから」とか「過去の作品をみるとこうだから」と断定的になってしまうのは、文化そのものを否定してしまうことに繋がるんじゃないかな……と、最近、今まで以上に違和感を感じています。

当たり前に存在していた文化だからこそ、違いを受け入れ、そして「想像する」。以前からも言っていますが、刺し子を通して伝えたいことは、やっぱり「想像力の大切さ」なのかもしれないな……と。
