Another frequent question. “Can we do Sashiko stitching with a machine?”. Well, why not? Since a part of Sashiko’s definition is stitching for a decorative purpose, it could be done with a machine and they “can” call the machine stitching Sashiko. However, I also tell them that they may be missing the fun and enjoyable part of Sashiko. It is like eating pizza without cheese. ☆
In our many years of experience, we feel like “Mending fabric equals to Mending ourselves”. We have ups and downs, good and bad days, after all it isn’t easy society to live happily all the time. We see so many opinions and judgements to be “normal (adjusted)” and one mistake can chase us to the edge. When the world let me down, I stitch. When I achieve, I stitch. The mindful time with stitching remind me who I am – we don’t have to be more or less than who we are – it is precious time to mend myself.
☆
Thanks to Sashiko, we can smile. Keiko and I had been through a lot of detours to be here. Some of them are unbelievably cruel. However, I guess it isn’t only our case. Probably yours was as cruel. We sometimes encounter the beyond-description cruelty in life. We (especially Atsushi) could have ended up withdrawing everything he had (Hikikomori). We also had months of not stitching at all – and Keiko look back on those days as the most difficult time. Well. Therefore, we restarted our activity in 2015.
☆
It is important to focus the beautiful result of stitching. Also, I hope, we communicate the fun part of hand-stitching. Not only Sashiko, but any form of hand-stitching & crafting. There is reason we enjoy our hand-made goods: Not only to be admired by, but also to cure us.
☆

I once wrote that the selfish reason for me to share the Sashiko we practice is to leave something behind for my daughter. I have goals & dreams in Sashiko – to pass down this culture as a “whole” practice. However, after all, I would like to “leave” something about…

A good friend of ours sent us this photo. She visited a small exhibition room in a small village in Japan, where people practiced ordinary Sashiko. This is another example of the “silent voice”. Not many Japanese know this place. We didn’t even know until fairly recently. However, their Sashiko…

When I do Sashiko at night, I remember my father who passed away. While I work on the PC, he moved his needle after all of daily routine work. — Heart Sutra Sashiko is one of the works he was working on, and a very few of these that I…

    恵子さん、本当に美しいと思います。造作(←失礼な言い回しでしたらすみません💦)ももちろんですが、ここまで積み重ねたご経験から来るものもありますよね。本当にきれいで見とれます🤩

Well spoken! Thank you for expressing what I’ve stumbled to explain. That the art we put so much time into is so therapeutic for our souls. I love, “also to cure us”!

The meditative aspects of hand sewing are therapeutic to me, and they heal me…. I’ve yet to try sashiko but I do other embroidery and hand crafted art. It is all therapeutic. And, I will try sashiko soon!!!

Stunning words, I read them over and over with tears and longing. You have much more than stitching to teach the world. I hope you write that book

Your words mean a great deal to me right now, and seem to parallel what I feel I am experiencing with my own current struggles. It motivates me to pick up some cloth and sashiko thread and start mending and being creative tomorrow.
