One of the scariest things in “Trend” is the power of “numbers”. In many cases, capitalism rules over the cultural aspect of the “matter”. Here, Sashiko. It is quite simple. Sashiko is popular → Many potential customers → Businesses go to Mass production → Cheaper option in the market (over existing options). That’s what happened to many hand-crafting cultures, I assume. Now, Sashiko is facing it.
☆
I wouldn’t deny this flow. I get benefit from this mass production & capitalism as well. However, I will keep saying there is “a huge difference” from the supplies & tools we have been using for years & a cheap alternative that came out in recent years. I fear, one day, that the people who know the actual value of Sashiko thread will be the minority – It is perfectly fine to have choices. I just believe more in humanity. The cheaper the better…? Come on. We should be better than that. I hope I can continue sharing what is “genuine”, and fighting to the trend of “Sashiko & capitalism”. ☆

For someone who is new to Sashiko, how will I know what is cheap vs genuine thread? I want my work to be authentic.
