A change of plan. I need to state what I am doing here on SNS until my confusion clears out. My goal is to share the “Sashiko” – not excluding others. Being said, here are 2 statements. (1) “I don’t make negative statements.” I occasionally make strong statements & posts with my whining (that I am tired of ignorance & I am angry), but I believe what I write is NOT negative – it is just honest. (2) “I do not attack others who enjoy Sashiko regardless of what they do.” I very rarely question others when they describe Sashiko with specific terms (such as “authentic” or “traditional”), but I believe I have never judged anyone specifically. (I admit that I have a strong preference, but I believe I have never shared the Sashiko/Boro I dislike).
☆
I hope everyone who read this post is with me on the 2 statements above. I am still in confusion, but I guess sh_t like yesterday happens. If a majority who read my posts think that what I write is contradicting the 2 statements, then I need to stop posting, and start learning how to write better – because my intention is to share the Sashiko & even encourage others to enjoy Sashiko.
☆
What I write may not sound good to those who don’t care about the culture behind the words. In this society, people say what the audience wants to hear for their purpose. I am not. I say what I feel honestly (not an opinion, a feeling based on my own history). I am here to share – not to spoon feed or cuddle someone with ignorance.

2nd Day for intensive Sashiko Denim. ☆ Another 3 hours here today, and decided to complete the left leg with Shippou & Logo only. Another 10 hours or so will be time for patching the holes with Sashiko. All-hand-stitching. I usually ask for a few months to complete. This time,…

☆ – – – ☆ It is not only Sashiko I had received from my “family”. In fact, Sashiko was merely a burden in my childhood, and my main interest was something else. I am not ready to share the “something else” since it is…

March 11th, 2011. It has been 9 years since the earthquake. I joined a Sashiko Recovery Project (@ootsuchisashikoproject). The kindness I have received there changed my life. I thought I went up north to support the people there, however in reality, I received so much kindness from them. I know…

I have been following you for a while now and I never read your posts as negative. I read them as heartfelt and honest. They are not entertainment, but kindly offered as educational. I always stop and consider for a while after reading.

Seeing your culture and your family’s generational expression stretched and mangled, commodified into a form that’s barely recognizable is deserving of righteous anger and protection. Anyone who says otherwise does not understand the sanctity of that you are trying to preserve.

What you were talking about yesterday, the slapping on of a patch and calling it “Boro” when it is clearly not Boro, that is a racist micro-aggression and you have every right to be upset. You also have every right to ask that folks call it something else. As someone that’s spent their life educating folks on this one particular topic that is a piece of your heritage your frustration at their ignorance is totally justified. Thank you for not throwing up your hands in frustration and continuing to teach. You are a great gift. Also, that Catalina lady needs to shut her face hole. Shame on her for being so rude to you. You deserve a space to air your completely justified gripes.

Please do continue to share your work and personal experiences, knowledge, and pain and frustration that comes with. I, and I’m sure the vast majority of your followers, truly appreciate learning about sashiko and Japanese culture from you so we can respect and understand the traditions. It shouldn’t be up to you alone to explain or justify your frustrations to people who don’t understand or respect your words and experiences – I hope that others will stand up to the negative people to let them know they are being disrespectful too.

Your posts and opinions are needed! You provide a context, a history, and a way of thinking about sashiko that is important and needed… and honestly, if you’re not getting complaints or internet trolls, it means you’re not challenging the current/mainstream thinking — which, when it comes to sashiko in America, is still largely uninformed.

PLEASE don’t stop posting your authentic Sashiko and Boro and your educational comments! You are teaching! Boro-type patchwork isn’t boro. Using a running stitch is not sashiko! People need to hear what you have to say, thank you.

I’ve only been following you for a little while, but I’ve learned a lot. Thank you very much. I have decided to learn more from you and others instead of doing “sashiko-inspired” projects, so that I can better understand the history and the technique. I hope to take your online course soon.
