“Sustainability” is a complex term, yet broadly used. Even in my field, I started seeing the word sustainability with the word Sashiko. Some consider Sashiko as way to enjoy the Sustainable Fashion, and I am one of those who practice the long-lasting & mending, which is “sustainable” in fashion cycle.

“It is recycling the materials, therefore, we can use whateve we have for Sashiko” is a true, but bit of insufficient statement.  It is true that anyone can use anything for their mending.  However, by saying “whatever”, it could end up with ignoring the stories and wisdom behind the word & culture of Sashiko. There are many reasons why we use & call it Sashiko thread, Sashiko needle, Sashiko fabric, and Sashiko stitching. By saying “whatever recyclable” with Sustainable Fashion, they may be unableing the “Sustainability of Sashiko”.

As I stated in the beginning, “Sustainability” is a very complex concept. I need to educate myself more. Therefore, I tried to make it as a video, instead of just writing.

Meanwhile, please also try to learn what Sashiko is before calling it as “Sustainable Fashion” with saying “whatever recycling & upcycling is good”. I am a big fan of sustainable fashion (and an actual practitioner), so I would like to respect both Sustainable fashion & Sashiko.

I often receive a question asking: [How can I respect your Sashiko Culture]. “Wondering & Thinking” is already respectful, and I feel a lot easier to talk to them in comparison to talking to someone who thinks they know all about Sashiko. At the same time, I have been thinking…
