I had an audio interview with a bright future journalist. She found my stories interesting in which I thought it wasn’t so extraordinary. If the ordinary for Japanese people can be the extraordinary (in a positive way) to the world, then what I do can contribute to the better. In fact, I learned the extraordinary wisdom from Japanese eldery people in which they thought it was the ordinary.

Please doubt your “ordinary” especially when you try to learn something foreign to you. The “normal” we justify can be something abnormal outside of our understanding. When we push(force) our normal as if it is the justice with suppressing the voices, then the culture will be destroyed by the “power” of trend/majority. For Japanese (who naturally practice Japanese ordinary), Sashiko may not be more than stitching. However, for non-Japanese, Sashiko is absolutely more than the word & stitching, and I am here to share what is the difference.

There are reasons some of our jackets have less Colors/Patches on the “good side”, although in western culture from an “artistic” perspective, showing the patchwork/color can be justified as “good” – not in this project, not in Sashiko. 昨晩、娘の未来のような学生と1時間程お話をする機会を頂けました。ユダヤ人と日本人のご夫婦の娘さんで、今は大学院生。刺し子についてお話を伺いたいとのこと。ふと思うのは、今の僕の活動の全ては、とてもとても個人的な動機からなんだなぁと。僕の幼少期。父親の死。（当時）一人日本に残すことになった母親への罪悪感と、彼女への応援の気持ち。そして、日本を知らずに育つ日本人としてのルーツを持つ娘に残してやれること。

とても個人的で、ある意味では我儘な話だからこそ、とても真剣になれるんだと思います。「刺し子はアートだ」という言葉は嬉しい。でも、「アートだから何をしても良い」となるのは、やっぱり嫌なんです。

こんなにも素敵な蒼色の古布を内側の布とするのは、西洋の美的感覚から言うと信じられないかも知れません。でも、これが日本です。表現するのは恵子さんで、その「なぜ」を説明するのが僕で。いつか娘が、彼女のルーツの何かを目にした時に、誇りに思って貰えたら良いなと。
