What I am teaching is a whole package of “expanding one’s view”. Therefore, reviews say it was an eye-opening experience for them. Learning “Techniques” is a must, but not the goal itself, right? It is about “what to do” with the technique we learn.
☆
My Sashiko Class is like teaching “How to ride a bike”. Then, in the following class, I will take them to a Park to enjoy Bike Rides. “Skill to ride a bike” is, of course, important & essential, and my teaching goes beyond as a preparation to start exploring the new world (for them) with the skill. With a bike, they can go far distances in comparison to places they could go on foot. If one wants to go to the East to see more of Sashiko – then they may need to encounter discomfort. I am trying to share wisdom & ride-accompany if they wish to.
☆
This may sound exaggerated – but, teaching & learning are for the purpose of “expanding” its world, right? Asking for a quick answer for quick satisfaction & teachers adjusting their contents to meet the demand from the audience are one correct answer in Capitalism & Marketing, but that doesn’t describe the whole practice of human beings. If that’s the only purpose of learning, we do not need respect for teachers & masters any longer. Ask to ChatGPT – and they will give us the optimized, quick & adjusted answers based on the need of questions. I am hopeful that there are things humans can do over “AI”. I embrace the power of “AI” – and therefore, I will not change what I teach to meet the demand of those who wish to master Sashiko right away.
☆
I may be wrong in business, but for Sashiko as a cultural practice, I believe I am doing well. So many have departed on their own Sashiko journey – and they are doing such a great job based on a small teaching I shared with them.

While waiting for my daughter, I registered the App “Threads” without thinking much. Now, I am not sure what is a good way to use it… Umm… For me, as an Early Millennial Generation, SNS is a bit of “too much” to use. Instagram, Facebook, Threads… these are from the…

The feedback, “It is fortunate to take your class”, is the best reward I can get in the workshop. I teach stitching, but I ask not to stitch. I teach how to speed up their stitching, but I ask them to slow down. One result of Sashiko is being mindful,…

Only 5 days ago, this big piece of white fabric had no stitching. This week, I had a good amount of time to talk to Keiko & other friends in Japan – about Sashiko while stitching Sashiko. I believe it is one of the original scenery of Sashiko that we…
