One of the “Core Philosophy” of Sashiko (or Japanese mindset) is Acceptance. We

atsushijp, 2024年9月15日

One of the “Core Philosophy” of Sashiko (or Japanese mindset) is Acceptance. We live in a moment falling from the “Future”, and become the “Past” via passing the “Present”. I like Sashiko because it is a practice of engraving the momentary Present into the fabric. I hope that all of the Sashiko Stories, actual Sashiko, and these “unskilled” videos would be a present to someone who I care about.
☆
Today was my birthday. Since 2014, after my father passed away, Sep.15th has become a day to think about “Death” more than usual. Is it strange to feel the “Death” on my birthday? Or, it isn’t even appropriate to talk about “Death” when people are twisting the word “Sashiko” for their positivity & joy? Before 2013, I was sure that I “own” my life. All I cared about was “I” after all. Then, many taught me the importance of “We” – instead of “I”. Sep & Oct are 2 important months for me to live with my father who I neglected to have chances to talk to – and, I am at the happiest moment in my life as I found reasons I live for.
☆
Sashiko is merely stitching. Just like this, it is an accumulation of stitches we put into the fabric. One stitch becomes a line, and lines become patterns. I hope that the accumulation of my “Present” will be the Past (Gift) for someone who will find Sashiko more than stitching in the Future. The reason I stitch isn’t based on “I”. I hope “We” can pass down this interesting culture, and I am stitching with wishes that it will for “Them” – who I care about.

I realized I was too tired to share something embarrassing in Jan.24th Live streaming. I didn’t mean to say it that out loud, but it already is out. We don’t have a studio for our work. We work in the family living room. Furthermore, I don’t see a path to…

So, people say Sashiko is the Art. They call us Artists. I don’t consider Sashiko as the Art (yet), therefore, we consider us more like artisans, not artists. Well, let’s say, Sashiko is the Art. Then, who defines the value of art? I assume the value of art is evaluated…

In this extraordinary (pandemic), ”Pray (only itself)” won’t change a reality. We need to “Stay (still)” rather than “Pray”. However, without “Pray”, nothing can be restarted. All of the changes start from our “praying (for the new ordinary)”. ☆ One of the core messages I would like to “tell” to…
