What I share here may be pretty “shocking” to your common sense. It is okay if you do not understand it first. We have a word for your experience – “Culture Shock”. Thanks to the Internet, we do not need to travel to other countries to experience it (only when you wish to experience it, though).

I jumped outside of Japan when I was 19. Since then, I have So Many Culture Shocks throughout. A book amount of writing – or a day long speech won’t cover the whole shocks, especially when I include international marriage. Can you guess what Culture Shock I still struggle with? Physical Culture Shocks are relatively easy to adjust, like food & toilets (Yes, we – Japanese – have the best toilets in the world). Psychological Shocks are more difficult to adjust.

It is still shocking when I see ads that Ford promotes “Fusion” in comparison to Toyota “Corolla”. They “badmouth” Corolla to explain the value of Fusion. I don’t remember the ads like that on Japanese TV. I don’t remember the comparison of CocaColla & Pepsi, neither – that is fundamental. I assume it is because of our tendency to avoid “conflict (dispute/argument)”. It isn’t our first choice to battle to some “specific” figure. Therefore, in my stories, I almost never mention someone specific when I say something negative. It is efficient to clarify the issue with specific examples, but I hesitate to cause the argument. I argue back when someone pick it first… but I hope “Culture Shock” explains the reason why we (Japanese) do not speak up so much.

Well. I am speaking up in the non-Japanese field (in English). So, it may be the time to align myself to the Culture I still feel strange about. I learned that a clear message is more important than avoiding the conflict… I will see what I can do.

時々「淳は何を言いたいのか良くわからない」と英語で指摘を頂くのですが、そりゃそうです。わからなくて当然。ネット社会に移動しても根本は変わらないのです。カルチャーショックって言うじゃないですか(最近耳にしなくなった気がするけれど)。違う文化に触れているのだからわからなくて当たり前なんです。逆にすぐに分かるのは、そのように調整されているからなんだろうとすら思うのです。

まだまだ慣れない米国の慣習に、「名指しで否定すること」があります。車のCMで、トヨタが日産を具体的車種と共に扱き下ろすのってあまりなくないですか?議論上等&勝てば正義の社会なのかもしれません。そこで刺し子を紹介しているのだから、そりゃ大変なわけです。でも、そろそろ自分を変えていく必要があるのかとも思うようになりました。名指しで否定するのは好まないけど、必要となる時もあるのかもしれないなと。

    You have really gotten me thinking, thank you! I love your musings. You (Japan) also have the best school lunches! And indigo dyers and potters and knife makers (but those are not culture shock, simply mastery through centuries).

    Japan does have the best toilets! Personally, I’m tired of all the “we are better than you” rhetoric.. I am perfectly able to judge for myself what is good and what is not. To bash the other guys does not encourage me to buy anything. And now that we are in the political election season, I am really, really tired of all the finger pointing, saying hateful things about an opponent, etc. that’s going on. I don’t want to vote for anyone that has to engage in that kind of campaigning in order to be elected. It only says to me that they are acting like spoiled brats. My opinion. I wish there was another option. A candidate worthy of being listened to and possibly voted for would not need to stoop so low. AND – I want one of the nice, deep Japanese bathtubs, too!
