atsushijp, 2024年8月27日

Some may wonder here what is my “fuss” all about (although they have left this account already by now)… In the last 5 years or so, in fact, I have received so many reactions to my voice – suppressing the emotional labor saying “You are Overreacting” and such. Some share their strong defensiveness to what I am NOT saying, and others casually ask “why can’t you be friends with everyone?”. Well. I wish I could be friends with everyone. Unfortunately, it is “almost” impossible because they & I have different goals. I sincerely want to be friends with anyone who shares the similar goal – it is showing (some) respect to the Japanese Culture behind “Sashiko”.
☆
My goal is to preserve this practice while involving as many (Japanese) Sashiko Artisans as possible. Money (Business) is merely a vehicle to reach the goal. Because of this clear goal, I cannot be friends with those who “use (modify)” Sashiko for the purpose of making money (including increasing followers). They will leave Sashiko when Sashiko doesn’t serve the purpose. They won’t care for the origin when it is needed. If they say they care, how can they communicate to the origin without proper language & relationship in advance?
☆
I can be friends when they share their “Care” for the Sashiko, including the one they have been ignoring & suppressing because of the inconvenience. I have met many of those who sincerely care (and therefore they do not teach Sashiko so easily).
☆
If you are new here, you may be surprised by the contents. This isn’t just a tutorial account. It is an account sharing the life-long wisdom (story) of those who live(d) for Sashiko. It isn’t for someone’s comfort & instant gratification. I share what Sashiko really is. I appreciate you for following years & deciding to keep following the coming years.

It was such a great workshop in beautiful Quilt Store @gothamquilts organized by @empirequilters. Boro Jacket & Sashiko Jacket. They learned the core skill to apply to make “their own” Sashiko piece. Thank you!

☆ – – – ☆ I miss our time together so much. Thanks to my dear friend in NYC, I used to offer several In-person Workshops before Covid-19. As much as I enjoy the Online Sashiko Class, I miss the time stitching together – chit-chatting…

One of the strong wishes I have in sharing Stories here is to remind of the power of imagination. “Reading between lines” is critical to understanding Japanese culture. Imagination helps us to read between lines. So, try to read what is not “written”, instead of reacting to what you think…

I’ve learnt a lot from you already Atsushi. Sashiko terms, techniques, rhythm, stories, pride, history and much more. Now I feel more comfortable thanks 🙏🏼 to go below the surface and retain the qualities held while stepping out 👏sometimes with sampling designs.

I really appreciate your posts and the knowledge about Sashiko that you pass on. It is truly a gift, and one that you’re not obligated to share. It saddens me that more people don’t appreciate it and don’t understand that it’s not okay for them to co-opt this tradition and make a profit from it with no respect for the culture or true knowledge of the history of sashiko. It makes me really happy that you’re generously educating people and fighting to protect this precious tradition.
