Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

Sashiko has its long history with many changes in styles, designs and how they approached (philosophies). The biggest difference between today’s Sashiko and the Sashiko in the past/origin is a variety (or an existence) of choices. In a very original form of Sashiko, it is imaginable that they had close to no choices in stitching. In the process of development (adaptation) of Sashiko, they graciously kept obtaining the choices to enrich this culture. Today, thanks to all of those wisdoms, we have an abundance of choices. A change in Sashiko is great – as it would be the future they would have hoped for.
☆
However, well “Therefore”, I want to speak up the importance of acknowledging the upstream. It is important for us to appreciate the “Choices” rather than abuse them. Saying “Whatever is fine” without proper knowledge & approach is a sign of ignorance. Because we have choices, I want us to be mindful of choices. Why do we use specific supplies & tools? Why do we call it Sashiko thread & Sashiko needles? All these questions with “why” have answers with clear explanations. Learning is always a continuous process – it will never end. By learning “whys (Stories)”, we can also pay attention to why we call it Sashiko, and ultimately the answer to the biggest question from many non-Japanese: [What is Sashiko?]
☆
I wouldn’t say using what we use (threads/needle) will automatically give them the answers. However, by using them, the story will be more familiar, and many things will “make sense”. Your willingness to learn will help us (Japanese Sashiko Artisans) to preserve the culture. Sashiko is more than what is introduced in English.

One of the core messages I share in Sashiko is “the care for the others”. In packaging the order, my first “care” is to deliver the items as “clean” as possible. Since there is a possibility of rain, I make sure that the item is covered by a plastic bag….
