I say the Sashiko with Cherry Picking “can” destroy the original form. It sounds

I say the Sashiko with Cherry Picking “can” destroy the original form. It sounds pretty dramatic. It’s only recent that I started using the word “Destroy”. Let me share my perspective on this.
☆
Sashiko is now known as “Visible Mending”. It is true that Mending is an important part of Sashiko. However, when one teaches others Sashiko only focusing on how beautiful & beneficial the mending is, only the positive side (Cerebration) will be acknowledged. [Celebrating the Mending to showcase one’s artistry] is NOT the traditional way of approach to Sashiko. It is the opposite. The Japanese practiced Sashiko to “avoid” future mending as mending was a sign of shame. One with so many choices is taking advantage of the practice born out of less (no) choices. When the original practice is forgotten, the culture will be destroyed.
☆
Some mix Sashiko & Meditation/Zen violently. It is true that Sashiko can bring a similar benefit from Meditation (such as Mindfulness & Relaxation). It is okay to approach Sashiko as a vehicle to meditate – yet, when teaching Sashiko to others, it comes with the huge responsibility of sharing other sides of Sashiko. Some use the words so easily without imagining the effect behind. What is “Zen” to begin with? It originated from China, but why is Zen considered Japanese? Then, is Zen an example of Cultural Appropriation (C/A)…?
☆
Culture changes. It should change. Therefore, I am not a big fan of C/A. However, there is a clear line between “Change” and “Destruction”. I am happy to be a part of Change in Sashiko – but I never accept to demolish the people’s ordinary behind the word.

How true it is not to have to repeat the mending . Wonderful analogy of sashiko a beautiful way of seeing things in a different light . Thank you for your insight to mending 🙏

Wow. So well said! Thank-you for sharing this. „The ordinary behind the words“ is quite profound especially when it comes to handwork and handcrafts vs the glamorous whirlwind if consumption, and you point the way so clearly.
