Many words change their meaning while traveling across the language & culture. A Japanese word you know may actually have a different meaning actually in Japan. Unfortunately, “Sashiko” already has its own meaning detached from what Sashiko actually is. This is a sad misleading by those who care profit over the culture. Then, I feel the urge to present what is a “good” case of a word traveling decently.

“Haiku” may be an example of good word-traveling. It is my limited understanding, so any correction would be appreciated. Haiku is a type of poetry consisting of three phrases composed of 17 phonetic units, 5-7-5. Of course, we can find many exceptions yet many Haiku writers in English try to follow this 5-7-5 form. At least, all of them acknowledge that the Haiku traditionally follow the 5-7-5 form. This acknowledgement is the sign of respect.

The 5-7-5 form isn’t a “rule” that everyone must follow. It is like a manner to approach this culture. When one understands the form, then deliberately decides to approach differently, then it is perfectly fine. When one writes a short poem with no acknowledgement to the 5-7-5, and calls it “Haiku” to get attention, then it “can” be disrespectful. I don’t know any Haiku professionals in English, but I enjoy the 5-7-5 rhythm in English, as I feel their respect & courtesy in their approach.

Anyone can call their stitching Sashiko. However, “whatever stitching” isn’t Sashiko – All required is acknowledgement. There is a huge difference between Rules & Manners – yet many people now only follow the rules defined by those who ignore the original. Please help me to correct it. I want to preserve Sashiko in as respectful way as possible.

海を渡った日本語の中に、上手く文化を尊重しながら英語になった単語はないかなーとふと探してみました。思いついたのは「俳句」です。英語での俳句、是非検索してみてください。日本語の五七五のリズムに慣れていると、一瞬、「は？これが俳句？」と思うかもしれません。文字そのものに音がない場合もある英語では、文字を一音と数えず音節で五七五を作り出す為、最初は違和感が出るのです。でも、しっかりと五七五を尊重してくれているのです。季語も紹介されています。

今の英語圏の刺し子には、「短い詩ならなんでもHAIKUって呼んじゃえ！その方がお洒落で目立つでしょ」という流れが存在します。五七五を守らないと俳句ではないとは言いませんが、五七五を知らない人が俳句を語ってはいけない。五七五は規則である必要はないけれど、心構えである必要はあると思うのです。手仕事で針目を作ればなんでも刺し子と呼ばれる世界観の中では、この「心構え」が無視され、ビジネス目的のルールだけが押し出されます。そんなんもう嫌なのです。
