Sometimes, Sashiko is misrepresented as “Slow-Stitching”. It is true that Sashiko encourages us to slow down in modern extremely busy days as we use both hands & spend hours of time. However, it doesn’t mean that one needs to stitch slowly. In fact, many Sashiko Artisans have quite skillful hands to achieve incredibly fast. We aren’t just so focused on speed, and speed isn’t something to compete against someone… so, we are rarely described as “Fast-Stitching” – but it is faster that many of people would think.
☆
Don’t get me wrong. This post is NOT criticizing those who enjoy Slow Stitching. Often, stitching isn’t the competition – so please enjoy your own stitching. This is a precaution for those who may learn Sashiko by those teaching Sashiko as “Slow-Stitching” without proper training & understanding. “Slow-Stitching” is more conceptual. When a teacher isn’t skilled enough, it is quite disrespectful to the practice itself. Teaching comes with huge responsibility.

This is one incredible sample of a Hand-Stitched Sashiko Furoshiki by @satokiyo828 who learned Unshin from me several years ago. Her work is incredible from both aesthetic & speed perspective, but at the same time, there are many people (both Japanese & Non-Japanese) who think this is “do-able”. When stitches are made one by one, this wouldn’t happen – Sashiko isn’t about making one perfect stitch. I teach it as [Core & Essence]. I hope you consider taking my [Core & Essence] Sashiko Workshop – available online, or In-Person (See you soon in QuiltCon if you are gonna be there).

Thank you for sharing the beautiful work of satokiyo828 👏🙏
Beautiful❤
Awesome Timelapse 🔥luv it❤
This is so beautiful! I just got my first Sashiko kit and I’m loving working on it.
What I love with Sashiko is that allows me to find my own pace, making the stitches my unique kind even if I am following a pattern or a technique. I enjoy being me through the lens of Sashiko. Arigato!
Beautiful furoshiki!
🙌❤
Glad you address this. 🙌 I reflected on this myself. The people in the olden days often times probably didn’t have the luxury to stitch slowly, as a goal. Stitching was a method to be used and had to be efficient, in both materials and the process itself.
Interestingly then the slowness of the process is something I can afford living in a rich country more than people probably ever could (or still can, if they live in less favorable conditions).
