Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

About 15 years ago, when I applied Sashiko to my favorite denim back then, the Sashiko Artisans surrounding me gave me strange looks. It was rare to have harsh criticism from them, yet it was another moment that I realized I was a “”maverick” in the tradition. Since then, I often come back to “Sashiko & Denim” when I need to remember who I am. Sashiko is my identity, and all the memories I have around Sashiko define my life.
☆
Later, as Sashiko was introduced as “Mending”, I started seeing Denim with patches with running Stitches. Don’t get me wrong. Personally, I enjoy them growing as it is forming a fashion trend. Only one issue here is the “Intentional Ignorance” – many try to listen to my voice, so I don’t find it problematic or offensive.
☆
Regardless of what the trend does, “Mending” is not the primary core of Sashiko. Sashiko includes mending, yet it was secondary. Therefore, when I do Sashiko & Denim, I put geometric patterns on the denim. Size, Style, Colors… They can be a subject for creativity, but the “geometric pattern” is critical to respect the primary core of Sashiko. I am happy that I see some friends & followers here apply Sashiko “before” it needs the mending application. For that, I am confident to say that Sashiko is Sustainable & environmentally friendly practice – not because of “recycling”, but because of “Putting Care & Imagination into the Fabric”.

Since my childhood, I had been wondering, “what if people no longer need Sashiko?”. I was raised as an heir of a Sashiko family, and I see that “Sashiko as the business” is far away from the ideal “business”. Think about it. Who would purchase a jacket or a tapestry…

Annual Inventory 🙁 I don’t like the process, but I like the result of finding something “I forgot”. In 2018, I will try to sell more fabric, including Vintage & Made-in-Japan fabric. なんとか棚卸し。 初年度の仕事で、しかも自宅の一室に荷物を詰め込む感じにしてるので、整理整頓して出てきた宝の山。しっかりと、恵子さんの血を引き継いでおります。 2018-01-04 16:41:04 Source

“Sustainability”, “Mindfulness”, “Uycycle”, and “Attentive to Details (Slow)”…

“Sustainability”, “Mindfulness”, “Uycycle”, and “Attentive to Details (Slow)”… we use these words as something new to improve our lives in 2023. As far as I know, in Japan, these words were part of their “ordinary”. These words weren’t something to achieve. They were there already, and we unfortunately forgot (or…

I thought sashiko was a conservation technique? Are just decorating jeans that aren’t damaged? Keen to understand.

Now I see the difference in sashiko and boro and the artistic purpose. Very good lesson I appreciate the design of sashiko and why it doesn’t need to be repairing or scraps of fabric like western fashion is making popular. Thank you 🙏
