Please, please do not follow someone’s definition so easily. Please do not be certain of a (quick) answer someone gives you. It is “your” life – as you find “Sashiko”, I want you to experience the beauty of “No Definition” or “No (Specific) Answers”. Therefore, I say, those Western Sashiko Teachers who give away their “quick” answers are not understanding the most important part of Sashiko. I want you to find your own answers. I want you to trust your own definition.
☆
“Definitions” are, of course, important. Besides the one we can find in the dictionary, we tend to add our interpretation to the Definition. This “addition” makes us different and unique. What is your definition for the [to Work]? To do a job for money? For me, [Work] is [to leave something behind]. That “something” can be a variety of things both tangible and intangible. How about your definition of [Profession]? Are Sashiko Teachers you see the professional?
☆
For me, [Profession] is a person/action of being responsible to receive something from the past, and pass it to the next generation in the specific field (with proper change if necessary). Among 2 types of teaching I often describe, one side of teaching – the “profession” comes with great responsibility. If a math professor didn’t know calculus well… they wouldn’t pass it to the next generation. As I teach Sashiko, I consider myself as a “Profession” (not a master). Therefore, I care for what I say, and I feel a strong responsibility. When I talk about the other Sashiko Teachers, I am rather sad and disappointed as I wish I could have allies in this – it would be nice to carry this heavy, yet important package together to the future.

Sashiko Live Streaming, August 22nd After learning the word “Cultural Appropriation” in 2019 after sad experience, I have been sharing my understanding of “Cultural Appropriation” in Sashiko – I believe I am very flexible in accepting “What Sashiko is”. One may say, “I am not stitching as good as you…

From the “Teaching” perspective, it is easier to offer the “Answers” as rules to follow. For example, if I were to set the rules saying each stitch has to be 0.5mm, I can rest after “teaching” what is the “rule”. This isn’t the teaching style I pursue. If the goal…

I introduced the special combination of valuable vintage fabric and Hitomezashi with the natural dye Sashiko thread. I found a photo of the bag we made in the past. Because of its value, the bag shocked me how Keiko could stitch on the vintage Oshima silk, but it is all…

The definition of “professional” is one that I have been struggling with in many contexts; thank you for your insight. (On this as with so much else.)

I find that as I work on my beginning pieces, I also find out about myself as much as the materials I’m using. It’s this way with all arts, but many do not consider it.
