Another Sashiko Workshop in warm FL. Another great opportunity to meet new frien

atsushijp, 2023年4月2日

Another Sashiko Workshop in warm FL. Another great opportunity to meet new friends. Another wonderful chance for me to share the “Sashiko” we have been practicing. I like “teaching” as I see the progress and change in their eyes. First, confusion & denial to the new ideas. Second, struggle and frustration, then gradually come to the realization “Umm. It isn’t that difficult”. I didn’t mean to be a Sashiko teacher, but I am happy with what I can do now.
☆
At the same time, in the crafting/making field, the “truth” exists in “making”. In this world where anyone can be a master (a teacher) in any field within any minutes, I only trust those who actually move their hands. A marketer has its own value & goals. Teachers need to improve their skill in teaching. So do the speakers, and even an activist. In Sashiko, when you learn something, please listen to the stories from those who actually practice Sashiko – not someone who thinks they “know” Sashiko without actually moving their hands. For that, there are many other Japanese “unknown” Sashiko artisans whom I want you to listen to besides me. Their voices are not introduced for many reasons. I will bring them up, so when it is ready, please acknowledge them.
☆
For this matter, I am just a beginner of Sashiko. The truth exists within those “unknown masters” who have been stitching more than decades… or even more than half-century. A decades of practice won’t bring the truth, to be honest. I am still looking for “it”. This is what “culture” is like – one spends their whole life, and their days will form the shape of culture. I am aware of what I can, and cannot. I won’t be “the master of Sashiko” as I spend less time stitching. Well, therefore, I only offer In-Person workshops in limited locations & time. I long for those “masters”, and as much as I would like to be like them, I would like to “acknowledge” them to keep the Sashiko we practice.

As the previous advice, I will actively advertise what we do – the Japanese Sashiko. Before, I used to say, “It would be great if we can share the Sashiko we practice”. From now on, I say, “Please share what the Japanese Sashiko we practice is like”. ☆ We share…

It is an honor to be included to the talk-event offered by @SelvedgeMagazine Japanese Textiles (I didn’t know “PechaKucha” was such a famous word in English.) It was challenging to summarize our Sashiko into 20 slides in 20 seconds each… but, I believe I could condense the essence of what…

“How to care & respect” is a difficult topic. One saying “I care about your culture” isn’t really enough. “Care & Respect” can be validated by action – not by just words. Words are, of course, important. However, if they support the people who appropriate the culture (directly/indirectly) because of…

В таком труде есть особенная красота. Ни какая фабричная вещь не сравнится с той в которую вложена душа и энергия мастера. Люблю Вас читать. Благодарю за глубину и ценности которые всегда актуальны.🙏💖🧵
