I often make “Anpan” – red bean paste buns. My daughter asked me why they are always round… So, in 2023, I bake the square bread, which I feel quite strange to Put Red Beans Paste in – so just homemade just square white bread. Sashiko is my profession, but my “main job” is to run our household somehow. My wife is a breadwinner (which was difficult for an “old-fashion Japanese male” to adjust, to be honest), and thanks to her I can keep the way of Sashiko as is. I try my best to do as many things with my hands. Cooking (Baking) is one thing.
☆
Some ask me if I teach Sashiko to my daughter. I don’t. It is simply because she hasn’t asked me yet. However, she sees me stitching – and more importantly, she sees “Sashiko” in our ordinary. She finds Sashiko Fukin on her favorite bread, finds her father cleaning the floor with stitched Zokin, and kisses her father who always wears something with Sashiko on when she rides on the school bus. Instead of forcing her to learn “Sashiko” as a technique, I want her to see Sashiko as ordinary. That’s something I can do as a Sashiko artisan – to make Sashiko (hand-stitching, handmade, DIY, and taking care of family) more ordinary to her.

(https://forms.gle/RPFLNE8uAy5CdZm8A)。

I wish I could simplify my stories into a word. Then, I can probably “market” the Sashiko better. However, “marketing“ isn’t my goal. I share the significance of Sashiko – which is not yet introduced in English. A series of stories going on and on. ☆ “Marketing” is sophisticated human-behavior…

Thank you for sharing this glimpse into your family. Your daughter is lucky to have a family in which she is surrounded by these aspects of her culture, but does not have learning the skills imposed on her. ❤️

What a charming post. And your write up warms my heart. I am reading a book called “Enough” by John Naish. Your post is so timely to me

I think the most valuable lesson your daughter is learning is that men and women are equal. The Sashiko lessons will come later.

I try to make handmade things part of my family’s ordinary as well. This is a lovely description.

I really appreciate the fact you admitted out loud it was hard to get used to having a wife as the breadwinner instead of the traditional husband. It takes one kind of bravery to accept it personally, and another kind of bravery to accept it publicly. But the earth keeps turning and I hope equality is a little bit closer every time. Thank you for your thought-provoking but so very peaceful posts.
