I received a question asking why I have 2 accounts on SNS, here and @UpcycleStitches (US). I share “Stories” here, is for business. Although I “sell” my culture to make it sustainable, I wanted to focus on sharing stories & minimize the money related topics like advertisement for class, new thread release, and anything related to the “business” activities. If you don’t mind that, please follow US so you can get the information before here.

When it comes to money, we tend to go extreme in dualism. While one thinks they think money is everything, another accuses me of making money by introducing my own culture. Money is NOT the goal here, but it is an important vehicle to bring us to the goal. We need money to keep “it” sustainable. For that, I never said that I am hurt because of someone making money by using the word “Sashiko”. That’s what they think I am saying when I bring up the topic of “Cultural Appropriation”. The pain comes when they “twist/filter” the information for their convenience. If Sashiko becomes something different so that “non-Japanese” can make money, then it is a problem. It is the matter of responsibility and commitment, not the action of making money itself.

“Sashiko” isn’t really a good pick when money itself is the goal. Think about it. How many people would consider purchasing denim over $1,000? To make it sustainable, hourly wages will be much lower than minimum wage. I do Sashiko because I like it, and because it is my dignity.

It is important to explain periodically how I am trying to “make the goal happen” – on top of just sharing Stories. “US” is like a vehicle, and SS is a driver, and you are welcome to ride on it to go to the “destinations” – the ticket is free for ride, but when vehicle needs a fix or low on gas, your help as a passenger would be very much appreciated – another good analogy? – By the way, my Sashiko class will teach you how to drive a vehicle, in this analogy.

😍😍😍😍😍😍
You don’t owe us an explanation, but thank you for this post, I didn’t know you had a US base or the other business account, and am glad to know about @upcyclestitches. It’s important to partition your personal and business accounts because an individual can be many incarnations and only one account can limit you.
👏👏👏👏
❤️👏
Good analogy, Atsushi.
I think when we can purchase supplies for an activity directly from practitioners, it’s the best way! You get products that will perform beautifully, will benefit the artist or teacher, and in the case of @upcyclestitches the items are beautifully and sustainably packaged. 😁

Kinda wavering all over the road at times, but I think I am improving! Your class is an excellent starting point on the Sashiko journey. Looking forward to learning more.
