I started teaching Sashiko in English only about 5 years ago with almost no confidence in what I would be teaching. Since then, every opportunity to teach Sashiko, I share what I have as if it is the last day of my life. Many students kindly tell me to relax. Yes, it is one of many teaching opportunities I offer – yet for a student, it is a one-time 6 hours (or more for Online Class) that they decided to invest in learning what Sashiko. I am still trying to improve my teaching skill – and I do not know if I would consider myself as a good teacher… Yet, as my friends laughed at me, the Sashiko by whom I passed the stories down (previous student, now friends via Sashiko) proof what I teach is valid.

The photo is one of the most popular Sashiko denim I introduce – and it is NOT my work… Today, a good friend via @exhaustedoctopus (She took Online Class though), amazed me by her Sashiko work. The post 3 days ago wasn’t mine either and there are a number of friends who I feel jealous of (how good they are). I sincerely believe everyone can do the Sashiko we do – By watching me stitching, anyone can be as good as we are – it is just a matter of time. My class & workshop is like a short-cut. Learning by watching may take years – instead, I will spend my time adjusting my teaching to their own hands. But again, I never say one can only do Sashiko when they take the workshop – I do not filter who can learn based on what they have & don’t have. Once they get the form appropriately, one doesn’t need months to complete one Sashiko denim, as Allie just completed within a day or so…? Oh my.

As I talk about Cultural Appropriation (which is probably different from what is discussed in general, so please read what I say first), I sometimes get a comment asking what they can do to respect it (avoid C/A). In Sashiko, they ask if purchasing “it (items, supplies, and tools)” from…

As the words “Sashiko” and “Boro” became famous, I came across a celebration of books & exhibitions introducing the Sashiko/Boro pieces made decades & even centuries ago. Not many, but there are some really good books explaining a Sashiko with photos of actual Sashiko/Boro items the Japanese made (I do…
