In most Sashiko projects, we stitch on the “back (wrong/hiding) side” of the fabric. In the previous Reel, the AsanoHa Pattern is prepared on the “Back Side” of the fabric, and the stitches result I showed is on the “Good/Showing” side. Why do we stitch from the back side? It is because we did not want to label either side as “good” or “wrong”. It is ideal to have both sides as “showing” side (of course, we as artisans can tell which side it is).
☆
I want you to think why the Japanese stitched – because they didn’t have enough wealth to replace the fabric. Did they have enough fabric to cover the “wrong side” of the fabric? Most likely not. Therefore, they developed the wisdom (technique & stories) to make both sides as the “good” side – to strengthen the fabric with stitching without labeling which is the good side. It is perfectly fine to make “knots” in the beginning & ending of Sashiko stitching. However, when we make knots, it will distinguish which side is good or bad. Instead, we have “Kasane” to make it happen – one of the pieces of wisdom I teach & one reason why I strongly recommend using the Sashiko Thread we use.
☆
Again, “making knots” in Sashiko is perfectly fine. However, if they think they know enough about sashiko, they should be able to know this wisdom, too. There is a huge difference between “Choose not to do it” & “Cannot do it”. Teaching comes with responsibility – otherwise, this beautiful wisdom could be lost (suppressed) by the bigger voice (here English as universal language. Sashiko is more than what is taught in English today.

Very clear messaging on yet another concept intrinsic to Sashiko and culture. I love the insight into the why. As you show, the why is so important to the how and the what. And it’s beautiful and sensible.
Thank you for teaching me this knowledge/wisdom. It has taken me two years to learn this and experience it in my stitching and life. Choice. 🙏
😍lovely
😮😮😮 amazing!!
Thank you for teaching about this wisdom! Stories matter so much. Before reading your caption I could’t tell which side was which, but after reading and looking closely I could (I think).
