We believe that something in the “Core” of Sashiko is “Praying”. Sashiko is getting popular for its simplicity, and I sometimes come across the huge misunderstanding (or mis-marketing with intention) of a Geometric Pattern as Sashiko Pattern. Yes, each pattern represents something with its own name – and/or carries the meaning behind it. I agree with the beauty of geometric patterns created by Sashiko. However, without the proper understanding (or even respect) to the Core of Sashiko, the interpretation as “Art” sounds quite superficial. I understand that “Sashiko is Art” is a compliment. We humbly accept that. At the same time, I occasionally see people saying “Sashiko is a form of Art so we can do anything as our creativity expresses”… Designs, Patterns by stitches, and Artistic Creations… they are important results, but without the core (or soul), then I do not want them to call their stitching Sashiko even if it looks like “Sashiko”. Vice Versa. Even if someone’s stitching doesn’t look like Sashiko, I am happy to see someone calling their stitching “Sashiko” when they properly try to learn & respect it. My wish is simple.
☆
Frequent Questions I receive are about “Patterns” and “Results (how to do)”. There is nothing wrong with asking these questions, but not something I would answer with joy. I can stitch the same patterns for a long time because the primary purpose of me stitching is often “Praying” – not meditation, not artistic creation, not for me so much, but for someone/something I care the most.
☆
It is important to learn technique, design, and how to. I teach pretty much everything I know in Online Class or In-Person workshop. Once they learn the “Core & Essence”, we can practice to “pray” together – What I teach is how to prepare your suitcase to travel. I want you to find your own Sashiko where you travel to (with the suitcase you prepare).

It was 2020 I wrote the script. After so many struggles, I uploaded the video about “Sashiko & Cultural Appropriation”. It is on our Youtube. ☆ There is a significant “twist” in translation (or filtering) when Sashiko was introduced with “mending”. Many people think Sashiko is a mending technique. It…

As much as I share my concerns about “Sashiko introduced in English”, I Never say (and feel) it is painful to see people enjoying Sashiko. I really do want them, and of course you, to enjoy it. What is the difference between those whom I encourage to enjoy Sashiko &…
