It was a fun time throughout the Thursday night to this Friday morning sharing about Sashiko in both English & Japanese. I especially enjoyed the time arranging the meeting of Japanese & Non-Japanese Sashiko Stitchers: I could confirm some of my messages (like Sashiko is NOT so much about Zen), and much more profound discussion.

Live Streaming is always available as an archive. I spent a good hour explaining the importance of “Age” in Sashiko. Without the concept of “Aging”, the understanding of Sachiko can be quite superficial. Here, the “Age” applies to not only our “age” but also “How we spend our time with”. I won’t be able to summarize all of the things I talked about in the Live Streaming hare, but one very important message is “Sashiko as a beauty in usage”.

We hope to meet someone who would take care of the pieces as we do and while talking about the importance of “Age” in Sashiko, I realize the importance of “hand it to someone”. Toward the end of 2022, I will spend a bit more time “selling” our items. I don’t know what is the best way to be fair, reasonable, and respectful to the artisans & customers (who would use it) yet… but I will push a bit more of what we make – like this Sashiko Furoshiki. Please keep the idea of “Age” in Sashiko – this will probably answer many questions toward the Sashiko translated in English.

途中の仮眠2時間ちょいと朝ご飯の準備を入れた2時間の休憩を挟んで、9時間ほど日英両言語で楽しくお話ししながら刺し子をすることができました。公開されている部分もあるので、興味を持って頂ける方は、是非Youtubeのライブ配信のアーカイブをご覧下さい。

9時間という長丁場だと、話す内容は四方八方に飛び散る形になるのですが、一番言葉にしたかったことは、刺し子を思う際に大切な「時間の概念」です。時間はとても主観的なもので、時を刻むと言っても対象も基準もバラバラです。ただ、ある一点で止まってしまう刺し子ではなく、流動的に動き続けることが、刺し子における（というか日本的美学における）時間の概念なんだろうと思います。壁に飾って鑑賞するのではなく、使い続けることで美を見つけ出すためには、時の流れを感じることは必須だろうと。

つまりは、どれだけ刺し子作品を作っていても、「時間の流れ」の中に作品を委ねないと本来の美は感じられないのかもしれません。そして、その「時間のながれ（＝使って頂くこと）」は現代においては、作家が苦手な分野だったりします。例に漏れずわたしたちも苦手です。これは手芸が日常の一部であった時では考えられなかった変化で、結果として今日の作家が向き合わなければいけない課題なんだろうなと。だらだら小難しいことを書いていますが、簡単にまとめると、「欲しいと思って頂ける作品」を作り、「販売できるだけの営業力」を持つということです。愚直に作り、丁寧にお話を続けていけたらと思っています。
