Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

Once, in its history, Sashiko was very close to the Japanese Ordinary. For more than 300 years, Sashiko has been transforming its form by accepting the change. I have seen the change, and I may have caused the change. The reason I am speaking up now, (the case some consider me one resisting the change in Sashiko), is that I do not see much “Japaneseness” in today’s big change in Sashiko (and Boro). I accept change. I even encourage changes. However, I want the change done mindfully, or at least done with/by those who understand the cultural context behind the words. In short, I want the change to be “Serious” and “Long-Term Wisdom”, instead of “Just Convenient” for “Short Term Profit”.

“Seasonal” is an interesting English word – it means “relating to or characteristic of a particular season of the year”. Sachiko’s main season would be “Winter” (for many stories), but Autumn is also an important season for me (and probably for others). In Japanese, especially in Haiku, we have a variety of specific words to indicate (describe) each season. Sashiko isn’t in this category (季語), but for me it is very much associated to specific seasons, with many stories. The ordinary to the Art: I am learning of the possibility of Sashiko – and therefore, I want them to learn the “stories” behind the word Sashiko before defining the word so easily.

Sashiko may be a new trendy word for you. However, please know that there are people behind the word, the people who spend(t) their lives in this culture. ☆ “I am just using the word of Sashiko. I am not here to debate” is already a sign of ignorance. Those…

The very first “order” to perform Sashiko & repairing on customer’s jeans. I started taking customized orders to do Sashiko & Repairs on used jeans. Every pieces will be “one-of-a-kind” and I would like to follow the customer’s preferences. Enjoying the process! Excited for the result. 年末から始めた「オーダーメードの刺し子ジーンズ直し」。お客様の思いを形にすべく、試行錯誤をしております。試行錯誤が楽しいんだけども。 2017-12-28 19:02:54 Source

I couldn’t get up from having caught a some kind of flu… Sorry for not being to respond to the comments and message in the good timely manners. Now, I gotta work on my daughter’s request – the 1st priority. — 久々に高熱で寝込みました。 針を持とうにも子守をしようにも関節の痛みで座ってられない程で、丸二日間と少しお休みを頂きました……。少しずつ、メールの返信やご連絡等進めてまいります。まずは娘から預かっている縫いぐるみを治さねば。 — 2018-07-08 11:39:26 Source

In your first section I picked up the difference between Eastern culture and American culture. I don’t say Western because there are European cultures that embrace the slow, thoughtful and meaningful attributes of things and processes, especially when learning new things or continuing very old things. Here in America, I think @jonimitchell said it succinctly in these lyrics. American culture is “Land of snap decisions, land of short attention spans. Nothing is savored long enough to really understand.”
People in all countries can have thoughtful processes, or they can degrade into the “quicker newer $$$” fad culture. But speaking broadly, I think reading Joni’s words might help you see some of the blockage in achieving your admirable goal. KEEP SPEAKING UP, but understand that some people aren’t interested in honoring tradition, culture and meaning. They want “the look”. A quick, shallow dip, then on to the next thing that strikes their fancy. Thank you for being a true teacher and crafter of Sashiko, and an imparter of wisdom. It is appreciated!
