I think (some) Boro is beautiful, but I am not a big fan of Boro in general. A reason I do not like Boro so much is that the value of Boro is very “personal”. In other words, the true value of Boro rather be defined by “Who makes it (for what)” than “What is made (for display purpose)”. The personal value of Boro sky-rocket when we can hear the stories behind it. When there are no stories available (and that’s the most case scenario since ordinary people happened to make Boro in their ordinary), we imagine. That’s how we think it is beautiful.

There are so many stories of Boro that we make – because we are making it “Right Now”. I hope you know it by now. We “can” make an authentic Boro now – not like “Boro-Inspired Patchwork”. It just requires the proper understanding of what Sashiko & Boro can be. We make Boro, and very rarely, we put a price tag on that. You may wonder how I could “price” on something so personal. Well, because it is so personal & stories are there, I would like someone, who knows us & whom I would like to know, to have our Boro pieces with stories. Western Art Dealers started pricing on the Boro – and it was a good thing to preserve the Boro as “Art”. Now, it is our (Japanese Sashiko practitioners) responsibility to share what “Boro” can be with our own stories.

「襤褸は美しいと思う（時もある）けど、でも好きじゃない」とか好き勝手なことを言っておりますが、なぜ矛盾にも聞こえるような表現になってしまうかというと、襤褸の価値はとてもとても「個人的なもの」だと思うからです。襤褸として「何が作られたか」というよりは、「誰が作ったか」を大切に思います。もし、その「誰」が「何を思って」作られたかを知ることができたら、その個人的な価値はもっともっと上がります。基本的に「誰が何を思って襤褸を作ったか」は記録に残されるようなものではないので、「想像力」を働かせることになり、結果として美しいと思ったり、あんまり好きじゃないなぁ（畏いなぁ）と思ったりするのだと思います。

襤褸がアートとして価値を持つことにより、ゴミ同然ものだったものが循環していくことは素敵なことだと思います。ただ、同時に「売れれば良い。認められれば良い。」というような商業的な感覚が襤褸と混ざることで、違和感にも嫌悪感にもなるんだろうと思います。個人的なものが価値を得たことで一般大衆の目に触れる。それは使い古した下着に多くの人が感嘆の声をあげるような感覚かもしれませんし、掃除前の散らかった部屋の写真に「散らかり方がかっこいい」と賞賛の声を頂く感覚かもしれません。まぁ、そこまで考えながら襤褸を作る人はいないでしょうけれど。刺し子をし続けたから、「結果として」襤褸になったというのが普通なのでね。

恵子さんの作る襤褸には物語があります。それは実は常に「子供等」なんだそう。それは作る襤褸を子供と感じているのかもしれない。あるいは、子供等（私含む）へ託す襤褸なのかもしれない。襤褸と一口に言っても、物語を知ると何か違う美にも見えてくるのです。

襤褸はカッコいいとか素敵だと思うことはあるけど欲しいと思ったことはないなぁ。自分で使い倒した物には愛着を感じるけど、、、。そこには共に過ごした思い出があるからかなぁ。

襤褸を見て凄いなぁと感じたとしても好きだと言う気持ちには正直言ってならない。
でも、もし、例えば母や祖母が縫ったもので長い年月を経て襤褸になったものを見つけたらそれには想いを馳せると同時に大切にすると思う。
I agree that there is a huge personal value in borough, but I also simply love it as it is. It’s abstract art in my favorite materials.
I recently bought a small piece of Boro so I could see better what it looked like – pictures don’t always show everything there is to see. I found it interesting to hold and look at and try to imagine what it might have been used for in the past. The fabrics used are very beautiful to me.
I really don’t understand or know what Sashiko or Boro truly is, or how to do it, but I really love learning more about it everyday! Thank you so much for your posts ⭐⭐⭐
