Thread Matters in Sashiko. Some say, “It is okay to use any thread you have in Sashiko”. This statement is valid when they know the difference in Sashiko Threads – without learning the difference, when they say thread doesn’t matter as long as “thickness” is the same, then it is unfortunate that they will not experience what Sashiko is fully. (There are some who intentionally ignore “Thread Matters” to market the thread they carry – I don’t need to discuss here how wrong it is).

What was the original purpose for the Japanese who had to stitch Sashiko? Why do humans use thread? In one culture, there are millions of stories. In fact, the millions of stories makes it “Culture”.
☆
When the result of Sashiko isn’t really ideal, before you start doubting your ability, try to use our Thread. When a stitcher can control the needle well (which I do not recommend), the immediate result may look similar regardless of type of thread. However, the stitches become completely different in the process to make it more “Sashiko”. Kasane (No Knots) may not work. More importantly, the stitches will not look good when one practices Unshin with non-Sashiko thread.

I offer many stories to answer all the questions above – here on Instagram, or on Youtube (Sashiko Story Channel). You can find the video about “Why does Sashiko Thread Matter?” and “No knots in Sashiko?”. Please do not ignore the story. Please understand the difference before believing someone’s indifference. Anyone “can” do the Sashiko as we do – they just need to learn and accept that something may be missing.

I used to think ‘well I’ll start learning with whatever I have on hand and if I get good I’ll buy the proper tools and materials’ which sometimes is ok, but with Sashiko practice, in my experience, is not ok!
Truth!

Thanks for the info. These jeans are incredible. Wow!
I’ve just learned about Sashiko and really would like to try everything in a proper way. The question about threads was the first to arise. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
