A series of piano notes by Keith Jarret saved my life. Movie “Forrest Gump” taught me the power of video. Series of Anime by Ghibli Studio changed how I view this world. Countless novels have given me the spirit of “Stories”. Since my childhood, I wanted to be “someone” who can be another person’s help. A person who can lift up someone’s spirit. Music, Film, Anime, Book… and Art. What support do you have on your back?
☆
My purpose of speaking up about Sashiko being insufficient in English isn’t about “Exclusion”. It is completely opposite. I would like to include everyone, and therefore, I need to redirect the understanding of Sashiko. Years of practicing Sashiko with other Sashiko artisans (friends) educated me the importance of “Ibasho (Place to belong)”. I understand our Sashiko pieces can be quite inspirational, but it will be more powerful when we can articulate the stories & even “spirit” within the work. Hand-Stitching is not as “fast” and “powerful” as Music and Movies to move someone’s heart. Sashiko isn’t a Silver Bullet for today’s suffering, but I am sure Sashiko can be the foundation of “status” which doesn’t require the Silver Bullet so often.
☆
I realize I am becoming “the someone” who may be able to lift up someone’s spirit. Not as direct/fast as the other medium, but as I sustain the “Ibasho”, I am more confident in what I am doing. Please learn what it is instead of what you think it is. Please acknowledge that you may not know enough about Sashiko/Boro. I hope one day I can travel all over the world with our Sashiko items. I want you to touch them, wear them, and feel them. Stitching can connect us, and it isn’t just about stitching beautiful Sashiko. It is about the Cultural Sustainability I would like to pass down.

Unshin, Hitomezashi, Kasane, Kogin, Gushinui, Boro and may more… There are numbers of Japanese words that cannot be translated into other languages without proper explanation. The explanation often requires the understanding of not only the technique, but also the background of the word. Am I a master in those? No,…
