In Japan, most of the kids in (public) school do the clarning by themselves – for their classroom & equipment. Among many discussions whether this is a good “ordinary” or not, I appreciate my experience of cleaning in my childhood. “Cleaning” requires muscle memory – so do other ordinary chores such as Cooking, Gardening, and Stitching. When I need to categorize (define) what Sashiko is, this “ordinary” is the group I think of. Therefore, I do not consider Sashiko as the (Fine) Art (yet) – Please check the previous Live Streaming on Youtube on 6/2 where I briefly talk about Sashiko & Art.
☆
I also enjoy doing almost all of the house chores. When I get so busy that I need to work so hard, some advise me that I should outsource the chores I do – cooking, cleaning, gardening, and so on. I choose to slow down the work – I just stop taking work offers even if it comes with a good pay. Doing Sashiko while someone is working for me… doesn’t really make sense to me. I like to work with my hands and body, and that’s one of the primitive approaches of “Zen” and Buddhism. I wouldn’t like a monk who outsources cleaning their temple while focusing on their own “training”.
☆
Boro is the result of this ordinary. Therefore, it has many stories – both positive & negative. Boro isn’t a word for stitching technique or style. It is the word of a “piece” of fabric with their own choices – or outcome of no choices. I wouldn’t trust Sashiko Stitchers who outsource “ordinary” while focusing on stitching – even if one is the world-well-known Sashiko “master” (I don’t consider them a master in this case).

I used to say that “When to learn” doesn’t matter in Sashiko as I receive concerns about “Bad Habit”. I never rush people to take my Class, and I still believe that the timing of learning “the technique” is pretty flexible. Everyone already has some “habit” and they somewhat need…

While enjoying the Sashiko Bobbins preparation I start stitching the Sample of sashiko thread color. For now, our 5 gradation color. They are beautiful as they are… only 5 kinds of thread, but so many colors on Indigo Fabric. 2017-07-19 13:35:46 Source

3 hours of live streaming on Friday. The first half is about a project of “From Scratch to Complete” and the 2nd half was on denim repairing. A glimpse of Asano-ha is what I love the most in denim mending. 2018-03-30 16:42:26 Source
