atsushijp, 2022年5月22日

I occasionally receive an “interesting” question: “How can you make even stitches with the same size & interval?”. I wonder. Do they want me to answer it verbally, and expect it to be done? It is “practice”, of course, to make it happen. My 30 years cannot be condensed into 3 sentences. However, if you read my posts long enough, you know there is a way to make even stitches like we do in much shorter time – it is the power of “Kata” – form – that is designed so that many people can enjoy efficient practice. I don’t teach “How to make even stitches”. I teach the mindset & form so that their stitches will be even as an outcome. For this, my class/workshop takes a very different approach to other Sashiko classes saying “let’s enjoy Sashiko”. When I am a teacher, I am not there to enjoy time together. I am there to teach. After the lesson, we can enjoy Sashiko together as friends. Teaching comes with great responsibility – and I take it very seriously.
☆
We get used to Instant Gratification. We expect someone to give us the answer when we ask. I can answer a quick question, but I don’t. A quick question can only bring an instant answer. We now need to “imagine” why the answer became “the answer”. In my culture, “answer” is something to realize, not given. A given answer may be full of someone’s convenience – like the answers in Sashiko now. When I say so, some accuse me for “selling” my culture as “class”. Yes, I charge a fee so that I can speak up tomorrow. However, all of the information is on SNS & Youtube when they spend enough time watching them (like 100 hours?). My Class just expedited the process by sharing “Kata” – a form & its mindset. Sashiko became a form of hobby, but Sashiko itself is more than that.

I have so many stories in this Jacket. Hopes, struggles, challenges, appreciation, and dreams. For me, this is the way to pass down the Sashiko we practice to the next generation. I will explain what the Jacket is about, but for now, sharing the beautiful image of this significant Sashiko…

The more I share about the Sashiko Story, the more I realize I have a lot more to offer. 20 hours of talking about Sashiko while stitching in FL. I worried if I would run out of topics to talk about. In reality, I feel I could have shared more…

“In order to get a good result (even stitches), don’t focus on the result.” This is my answer to the question, “How can I make stitches so even?”. The Online Sashiko Class (or In-person after Covid-19) is an opportunity to learn to do so. ☆ Many of “how to Sashiko”…

Thank you. Your perspective on sashiko sheds light on the problems with our culture of convenience. As I learn about sashiko, I learn about so much more.

So bizarre, that accusation “selling your culture” in a class. Teaching culture and demonstrating experience is highly valuable; you are placing a value on your time and they gain the privilege of firsthand observation and interaction with someone masterful.
People are so weird. You get all kinds in this world.

If I had the money for your classes I would take them gladly. As it is I keep practicing and trust that, as my granny says, you can’t rush something good

Your words are so true and powerful. I too teach and I agree – teaching is a great responsibility. I’d love to take one of your workshops. I so respect and appreciate and am inspired by your 30years of practice
