It is very challenging to define what Sashiko is because of its ordinariness bas

atsushijp, 2022年5月18日

It is very challenging to define what Sashiko is because of its ordinariness based on Japanese Culture. However, in my experience, many eldery Japanese people have quite “specific” image for Sashiko. The common image is occasionally introduced as “Tradition”, but for them (us), it is more like “Usual”.
☆
Culture should alter its form. Therefore, I bystand with the change in Sashiko when the change is done by someone who understands Japanese Culture with acknowledgement and thoughts. However, for those who do not know “Sashiko”, it is very important to share the “common image” the (elderly) Japanese carry. I believe some Sashiko pieces we share here follow the specific image of “usual” Sashiko for us.
☆
Sashiko in Patchwork. Colorful Patterns for Hitomezashi. Picturesque Design with various size stitches. Random Stitching with Free-hand. Embroidery-like stitching. All of them are an important part of Sashiko Culture. However, I sincerely hope that these “changes” will not erase the original. No matter how great “change” is great, we cannot ignore the root. No matter how “smart” we become with technologies, we shouldn’t ignore the wisdom from the people who lived for the foundation we live in. The same goes in Sashiko, too. All I am doing is to share the stories so that those who do not know about Sashiko can learn about its “Root” and following tradition. Please do not ignore the root. Please be mindful who you are learning Sashiko from. There are reasons I am speaking up like this – to fight against Ignorance & Indifference.

Introduicing Katakai-Katazome Cotton Fabric. They aren’t vintage, but made in Japan with the traditional method. I am so proud of Japan for producing such a beautiful product. Good for Sashiko. Good for patchwork. 2017-12-22 20:47:53 Source
