Our Sashiko Jackets & Bags, and some “Boro” pieces were exhibited in Kaunas, Lithuania, as a part of Kaunas 2022 “Japan Days in Kaunas WA”. The exhibition was achieved hugely thanks to Olese (@olese.kekiene) who passionately involved us to the exhibition, and Aura Dance Studio (@auradancetheatre) uniquely & beautifully “exhibited” our Sashiko items.

To be honest, I do not know how much they understand our messages. English is the only language we can communicate, but not our first language. They asked me if it is okay to “wear” those items, and I said “Of course. They are made to be worn”. The true beauty of Sashiko (and Mingei – Japanese Folk Art) exists in the “ordinary days” – which includes using it and moving it.

The Jackets, Bags, and Blankets were introduced in the Performance Art. Again, to be honest, I don’t understand the art much… but I can say it was such a wonderful opportunity for many of us (Sashiko Artisans) to expand our perspective. We have (at least) one thing in common – the appreciation of the Textile, and we would like to “use” the textile even if it is the exhibition format. We make everything by ourselves “today” after washing the vintage fabrics with our own hand-stitching. Therefore, they are strong enough to be worn. They are clean enough to be snuggled. For me Sashiko isn’t Art (yet), but I can say that Sashiko can be (a part of) The Art.

👏👏❤️❤️❤️
We can appreciate and respect without complete understanding. Through appreciation and respect, we slowly begin to understand, even though there may never be full understanding.
Beautiful words…

I can sense through your words, your passion for the history and application of ancient stitching methods. I am very grateful that you take the time to generously explain your knowledge of authentic Sashiko stitch work!
