Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

atsushijp, 2022年5月4日

I believe my message is quite simple. Anyone can enjoy Sashiko. Just, Please, Acknowledge that there are stories & people behind the words. I believe that we as humans are decent. When one acknowledges the people & stories behind, they would care for each other. We would imagine the joy & pain behind the word. In a big trend of Sashiko, some violently filter the cultural practice by intentionally ignoring the voice. That’s the only form of “Cultural Appropriation” I am fighting against. “Not knowing” is fine. I am here for that. “Ignoring (the voice)” is the violence I feel pain from.

☆

“Patchworking” and “Mending” are important parts of Sashiko, but they do not represent the “Whole Picture of Sashiko”. For that, I am here to protect the Sashiko we have been practicing, from someone who takes our cultural practice away from us. I am here to protect Sashiko, by sharing, by including (anyone who is interested in Sashiko with care & mindfulness), and by asking YOU to acknowledge (keep learning) the Sashiko I would like to pass down. I appreciate your willingness to listen to our voice in this crazy world where anyone can be any form of “masters”.

Alternative of Sashiko Shiawase (meeting with 4 lines) Furoshiki –

2024年7月18日2024年8月27日

I liked the previous “Shiawase (meeting with 4 lines) Furoshiki”. This is the following project with “free hands concepts” with several rules like the color of threads. Well… as I put a bit of “my ego” into this and tried to be more “design focused”, and it is turning… umm,…

How I restarted Sashiko Journey

Instagram Archive of “Restarted Sashiko” About 10 years ago, soon after I immigrated, I received an email from my mother Keiko. She asked me if I were willing to “restart” the Sashiko. I don’t talk about the past so often outside of the workshops, but as you may guess by…

Indigo Dyed Sashiko Thread, hand-dyed by Keiko, is now restocked in both Japan and USA. The dark and light shade from Indigo blue will enrich the Sashiko project. I use this thread for Denim mending as well. The Indigo blue and Denim blue goes very well together – and the…

The message here seems clear and reasonable. It’s nice to know we can refer to this if we encounter misrepresentations.

Honouring the wisdom that is passed down and the knowledge holders and those who share. Thank you for sharing. This is a complex conversation, indeed, and this is such a great way to open and allow those of us (me) from different cultures to keep learning

Looking for some embroidery and visible mending on IG, a few months ago I stepped into Sashiko 🤷🏻‍♀️ … and I got amazed by the beauty of the simplicity 😍, a different way of using a needle, a threat and a fabric … I used some very simple patterns on one old jacket, knowing I was very far away of making Sashiko. I wondered about “cultural appropriation” knowing that my labor could be labeled as “This is NOT Sashiko” … and suddenly you appeared on my feed, so Thank you for your teaching and your respect for this beautiful craft, and of course for saving the culture from the cultural invasion anyone can do in these times. Thank you from Argentina 😍
