Our Sashiko Jackets & related items will be exhibited in Kaunas, Lithuania on April 27th, as a part of Kaunas 2022, Japan Days in Kaunas “WA” (https://kaunas2022.eu/en/wa/). With professional help from Aura Dance Theater, some Jackets will be introduced in “moving” in addition to exhibits. I have no clue how it will be exhibited, but I am very much excited to share Keiko’s work, and the work made with our Sashiko friends (including rising artisans who took Atsushi’s Workshop in Japanese in the last 4 years). If you can make a visit, please let me know how they looked in the professional exhibition.
☆
To be honest, initially, I was skeptical. The offer was “too good to be true”, and the communication became challenging due to Covid & Current situations (Plan changed often, I believe). Plus, we communicated in our non-native language. After all, It was Olese (@olese.kekiene ) who passionately wished to introduce what we make in her country. We cannot thank enough for her commitment to take action on bringing Sashiko to the exhibition. Another help from Emilija (Aura Dance Theater), it is an honor to be part of the exhibition.
☆
We were to make some items debut in 2020, as one “Get-Together” Exhibition in Tokyo, which we canceled due to Covid. Many Sashiko stitchers joined the Jacket, but only a few looked by themselves. It is our goal to have an exhibition in Japan, one day. Before that, I cannot wait to share some of the photos from Olese and Emilija.

Continued from the previous post.  ☆ 【This proves your authenticity】I have never referred to my Sashiko as “The Authentic Sashiko”. However, my stories are authentic because they are my memories. The fact I can stitch is also authentic because I can. I don’t know if I am authentic or not,…

It isn’t easy to speak up honestly in a big trend – sometimes, an honest voice can be perceived as negativity or even arrogance. It is always easier to get along the flow, but there are reasons I share the honest Sashiko Stories. It requires will-power to keep doing so….

I say Sashiko isn’t (Fine) Art. However, I humbly accept an admiration to our Sashiko as the Art (because I believe they mean well). I just don’t want “Art” to be an excuse to “whatever is good because it is art”, or even worse, “Not learning”. As long as one…

Artist @nickcaveart made amazing “soundsuits” and some were created especially for local dancers to wear and dance in where the exhibition traveled to. I’m excited for you both to have work presented as “living heritage” and set in motion. Congratulations!

When I see work like this I feel overwhelmed as I’m still working in 4” squares in the hope of making a simple tote bag.
