Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

Many told us that our Sashiko is “Traditional”. We often use the word “Tradition

Many told us that our Sashiko is “Traditional”. We often use the word “Traditional” in contrast to “Modern (Contemporary)”. I have another perspective on “Tradition”. It is an “accumulation” of people’s knowledge, wisdom and story. I am sharing all of “my tradition” so that we can pass down the Sashiko we practice.
☆
In my understanding, [I taught myself] doesn’t mean there are no “teachers” to them. They probably didn’t learn it from a specific teacher, but I don’t think it is possible to “create everything from nothing”. Instead, we learn by watching, listening and reading. In the past, it was someone in the family or in the neighborhood. Once, it was a pile of books. Today, it is a series of SNS Posts/Reels and videos on Youtube.
☆
As you know, I keep saying “Please copy what I do” while sharing the videos of my stitching. When I decided to share them in 2016, regardless of many thoughtful adverse advice that I would lose my “bread”, I needed to take the risk. I would rather it be copied than modified, or even worse, “erased” by filtration. So, please copy what we do. If you can, help us to make living by taking our class (I will make “it” happen to you, for you) and/or shopping with us.
☆
I am passing down the Sashiko I learned from many anonymous Sashiko artisan. They prefer to be anonymous, but I prefer to be noted so that I can pass down the “tradition” – an accumulation of stories. If you learned Unshin from our videos, please tell others about us. If you learned Unshin from somewhere else, your voice of who/what you learned from will help us to keep the “tradition”. I would like to learn from them, too. It is a journey of finding a missing piece of “Traditional Sashiko”.

Oops… I just realize that I have not done any advertising campaign (like adding new items online and sending newsletters) for almost 3 months… by focusing on sharing our insights. It is true that sharing the wisdom is our primary goal. However, I would like to make our activities “feasible…

As we speak, I got another “quick-read” hurting comment. So it is inevitable in taking actions. I know that the people who demoralize me do (did) not read what I write (wrote) mindfully. I feel it is unfair to ask 99% of others to force the shift I am making….

(5/27) While reading news & movement, I wonder what “Sustainability” really is. It is an extremely important concept – how to keep our lives sustainable. Taking one step further to care for the environment is indeed necessary. At the same time, we have to remember, “Sustainable” is NOT a magic…

Thank you for sharing this reflection. So much truth in how “self taught” includes much learning and gleaning from many teachers, and I love this thought about what it means to be traditional.💕

Tradition is accumulation of knowledge, wisdom, and story. That rings so true and it’s going to stick with me. Thank you.
