Our Sashiko Story to Your Sashiko Journey

We rarely make a Tapestry, or an item to be just “displayed”. It is because of our belief (value) for the Japanese Folk-Art Movement in the early 20th century. When we make one, we usually have a very specific theme – in this project, we wanted to visualize Atsushi’s statement: “All Different, All Good”. We wanted to try how well (difficult) we can connect different people’s stitching when we work on “Unshin” – the rhythm of stitching, without the actual size of stitches pre-printed.
☆
“Unshin” is one of the core features of Sashiko. I see many non-Japanese people start using this word – and some Sashiko experts in English are finally using the word “Unshin” as one of the important aspects of Sashiko. If I were to admit my achievement, spreading the word “Unshin” can be one. Many Japanese use the word “Unshin” – I never claim the word itself is mine. It was there, and has always been there. Now, I hope, those who learn Sashiko also learn what “Unshin” can be. Well. At this point, I can see 2 groups: one who understands what Unshin can be via our stories and videos, and one who still thinks Unshin is merely a “technique” of Sashiko. If you are new to Sashiko, and the word Unshin, please try to read/watch as many Sashiko Stories as possible. It is quite easy to copy & enjoy what I share, but it is almost impossible to “teach Sashiko as an expert” based on what I share (I am willing to help, if one wants to teach Sashiko).
☆
This tapestry is made with 26 Sashiko practitioners in Japan – with the saying All Different All Good. Please close-up and look. It is all hand-stitched, different, yet somewhat “unified”.

Well. Such a Joyful 1st half of June. Although I would add more stitching & fabric, and then clean out the basting threads, to call it “completed”, I would need to reorganize my priority for the 2nd half of June. I mean I gotta do something for Income as I…

One of the Kieko’s (original pattern) Jacket. The pattern is a combination of traditional geometric patterns, so it isn’t actually original, but she enjoys her creativity. ★ The more I try to introduce Sashiko (Culture), the more Sashiko gets popular in the world, the more challanges I have to overcome…
