There are many stories behind my statement: “Sashiko introduced in English is NOT wrong, but insufficient”. The “trend” will never be a trend by itself. There is always a “strategy” behind it, to make the flow. It may be “someone” or “something” – unintentionally or intentionally. Sashiko is now well known as a Japanese word for “Slow-Stitching”. Yes, it is slow-stitching in comparison to mass production. However, I do not know any artisans who were proud of their “slowness”. In fact, they didn’t really pay attention to the “speed” – it is just a matter of our own “rhythm”.
☆
“Sashiko as Slow-Stitching” is a trend made in today’s value. “Slow” is a critical concept now as a counter-trend for “Fast” – appreciating “Slow” can equal having a mindful choice to our social issues. I am happy that Sashiko can contribute to make a better place: I do agree with the importance of sustainability, of course. However, it doesn’t mean that the trend can re-write (ignore) the original stories.
☆
Skill is fun to look at. “Speed” may be something to entertain, either slow or fast. However, the speed or skill isn’t enough to describe what Sashiko really is. Regardless how fast & accurate one can stitch, it doesn’t make him/her the “master” of Sashiko: at least for me, I do not respect a master who says “whatever” or “just because” with intentional ignorance.

Sashiko from Japanese Traditional Gaiter. The pattern with Horizontal, Vertical, and Diagnal is very “making sense” pattern to do Sashiko, for the purpose of strengthening the fabric. — We practice Sashiko & learn the culture and concept of it everyday. It is a very fun & enjoyable proces of stitching….

Finally, a copy of the PieceWork Summer 2021 issue has arrived. I cannot describe how grateful I feel to the PieceWork team to respect my writing style & nuance in their magazine. It has been very challenging to “write” for publications (I had several very painful experiences). However, as long…

I wish I could stitch fast – I’m not sure it’s actually something I’m capable of nowadays because I’m too shaky and clumsy! Still I don’t feel that my lack of speed lessens my love of the process or the love I put into the things I stitch.
